Well, this is a bit off the science/tech topic, but does address the main point I think you are making, that Americans growing up simply drifting along on the prosperity that has been given to them.
It strikes me that a huge part of the problem is that American youth have fallen into apathy because we don?t? know who we are anymore. Why do we not care, while Wu and Zhou care enough to work as hard as possible to excel? Could it be that we are loosing our identity?
In a world where American history is being replaced with ?social studies? that emphasize any culture but the American culture, where is our identity as a country going to go? It?s going to disappear. If we have no identity, if we forget the significance of ?one nation under God,? and ?E pluribus Unum,? who are we? We are automatons. . And the Pop culture entertainment and star searches seem naturally to follow.
This generation faces a choice. We need to figure out who we are, how our prosperity came to us, what it cost and what our forefathers were willing to sacrifice to be able to give America the beautiful to their children as an inheritance. If we do not know any of these stories, how can we know who we are? We can?t. And until we know who we are, until we can take pride in the gifts that have been providentially given to us, we will continue to drift.

Ummm..The above was me BTW...wrong SN....You can tell by the spelling that that would never be me ;-).
