I thought that was a mean joke about Nebraska. But oh well. That's still pretty cool you got your picture with him! :)

Congrats, Brett. Good reporting on the comments, as well.
Justice Thomas' comments remind me of the line about the old-time preachers' way of settling arguments: they'd grab a forty-pound bible, slap it on the table, and say: "Show it to me in the Word of God." In its own limited way, the judge's job is quite the same - show it to me in the law.
When it comes to the Constitution, doubly so. That's the genius of the Constitution - it was written as a limit on the government, not on the citizen, and it specifically says so. It was meant to be simple enough to be understood by anyone, not just a few privileged jurists. Anyone who pleases can read a copy (mine is right next to the keyboard) and see what our rights are, for of course rights that require expert explanation are, in effect, rights at the sufferance of those experts - if they change the explanation we are left with no defense.
The Colonists fought for many years before actual war to have their rights respected in Parliament and by King George; then came four years of open war followed by six years that nearly bankrupted and collapsed the several states' governments. After nearly a generation of such unrest the Preamble comes as no surprise: "We the people... establish justice, ensure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity..." The real shock is in thinking that the Founders struggled 20 years or more in order to replace the tyranny of the King with the tyranny of the courts.

Great article!
It's fantastic that you were able to meet Justice Thomas, and learn so much about him. He seems to be a very accurate thinking man.
I only have ONE little tiny problem with this whole article.
The 'Who is he' section, calls him an 'African-American'. I realize it was just a quote, but I figured I would bring it to your attention. As I understand it, he was born in Georgia.
That makes him an American. :)
Yeah. Pet-peeve of mine. I listened to John Wayne's "The Hyphen" too many times, I guess.
Anyway, I like what he's been saying, and I like how he's been saying it. Very interesting fellow, without a doubt. I'll have to study up on him some more.

Great story! I am sure that was quite an experience. I like what he said, "Its a good time to start."

Thanks for the article.....it displayed his views on one of the most important issues of our day, in my opinion(abortion). It was very encouraging:) I do have a question, though:
Are you guys considering getting into law, then? Or was this internship for the growing experience?

Thanks for this post. It's wonderful to hear about the leaders in our country who are willing to stand up and take the heat for what's right. Such an encouragement.
God Bless America!

Wow - that is really cool.
You know - you are the first teen guy I have seen wearing a suit execpt for my brother. Why is that people dress as far down as possible? Suits look good!

Catie: Thanks! Actually, right now (working at the Alabama Supreme Court) Alex and I wear suits more than we wear "normal" clothes. Your question is right on. Teens need to know how to dress in a way that is appropriate. Too often we just dress the same way no matter where we go or who we're with. That is reflective of ignorance on our part or even plain disregard for others.
Chloe: Um . . . what new look?

On the dress code, I see clothing (and many other things) with the following judgements in mind.
What is the purpose?
Clothing is primarily to cover the body, as seen in Genesis. Does the clothing do this?
What are we trying to do with it?
Picking clothes should revolve around purpose, not looks. Much of the clothing today is completely useless for anything. You can't run with it, you can't go to church in it, you can't meet with businessmen in it, you can't keep warm in it, etc. It's all about what 'looks good'.
Just my thoughts there. We should just design by intent and purpose, not by looks. I don't think I'm making any sense, but hopefully somebody will gain something from the jibberish I just wrote. ;)
Brett: I think Chloe is referring to the way the sidebar is on the other side of the page, and much of the text is different. If I'm not mistaken this is a glitch with blogger, not a 'new look'.
