Take A Chance

Sounds like someone went on a bender looking for script-writing contests . . .

If by "coming out on the con side" you feel that 99% of weblogs will remain amateur, I completely agree. I also liked Shirky's comment that blogs are a "vast and diffuse cocktail party." I'm not sure the cream rises to the top. It's like any other medium (movies, tv, books), the ones that will be consumed are the ones with the biggest buzz -- quality or no. This is great if you're Wil Wheaton or even a faux Andy Kaufman. Otherwise, you might as well relegate yourself to the idea that you're not doing anything more than a neighborhood bulletin, which any eight year old with a Fisher Price Printer's Kit could accomplish. (Which reminds me, hang on to your copies of of the 1982 Wine Leaf Cove Gazeteer, it's going to be worth something some day!)

Weblogs' low barrier to entry is somewhat misleading, however. Someone is paying for that bandwith, that server, etc. Will advertisers continue to pay those bills?

As it is, there is more good content than any person could consume. I bemoan a future where the signal to noise ratio is reduced.
