Great concise review of what Wayne Shorter is doing these days. Perfect description of the concert I saw 6 months ago, which got the same thunderous applause.

I enjoyed reading your comments on Wayne Shorter. He and the Quartet are performing in St. Louis next month along with some musicians from the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra.
It does seem a bit unfair to compare Shorter's current band to his esteemed colleagues of the past, though. On record at least, I've found Blade, Perez and Pattituci to be fine musicians, and these days very few veteran leaders of Shorter's stature work exclusively with their generational and artistic peers. Anyway, I'd be disappointed if the current band was trying to mimic, for example, Hancock, Carter and Williams. They absolutely should be finding their own approach to the music, otherwise it's in danger of becoming a museum piece.
Regardless of what he's doing now, or who he's with, I'm looking forward to seeing Shorter play. The only other time I've seen him perform live was with Weather Report way back in the mid-Seventies.

Thanks for the kind comments, both of you. Two days later, I heard a web broadcast of a concert played the following day (to clarify, my concert was on sunday and on tuesday they broadcast on Shorter had played in France on monday).
Despite the low sound quality, it was really interesting to hear the group twice in such a short span and in similar conditions (festivals) and hear what was the same (the very long opening medley, some of the cues, the general sound and interaction).

J'aime bien ce que tu écris ,j'étais moi aussi aux trois concerts et j'accepte volontiers la critique venant de quelqu'un qui semble s'interresser à mon travail.
Le concert de Shorter était fabuleux.
