I flinched when I read this
You're not the only one. Oy.
I was at those sessions too, and I can assure you that it was not all sweetness and light. How could it be? Take a look at the picture that accompanies this post, which was taken late in the second day of recording, when things were not happening the way she wanted. I think it captures the mood in the room pretty well.

I should add, now that I've had the chance to read the entire thing, that the awful "cocktail hostess" comparison is thoroughly undermined by the portrait Mandel paints in the rest of the (very good) piece. He does actually give you a vivid sense of just how much Maria demands of her players.

Okay, okay, a few people do (Ethan as well, I think). But it doesn't seem to be any more the norm for jazz musicians than it is for the general population.
