"After a couple of questions relating to the job, we spent the rest of the hour chatting about a variety of topics ranging from the New England Patriots to the Mars rover." This is a really bad sign. The interviewer didn't like you at all and gave up on you as a positive candidate, but company policy must be to make nice until the interview time is up. This from someone who has interviewed many many candidates for a Fortune 500 compnay.
