Thanks for the review and the mp3s - much appreciated.

thank you so much for recording the show! I was at the NY show the night before and loved it! any details on when they'll be hitting the NE again?

btw, what's the EP called and is it worth getting?
Jorge | Homepage | 11.15.04 - 12:47 pm | #

Like ohmigod. Thanks for the review. I've been waiting to see them live as well. Can't wait. Also thanks for the live recording. Stellar I'm sure.

peace,

mplsindie | Homepage | 11.15.04 - 12:57 pm | #

btw, i think the burning bridges/breaking hearts cover is a Leonard Cohen song, or at least that's what they announced at the NY show.
Jorge | Homepage | 11.15.04 - 1:01 pm | #

Hmmm... I thought for sure they said Neil Young, but I'll check my original recording and make sure.

I'd heard they were doing a Cohen song, but after looking through his lyrics (at www.serve.com/cpage/LCohen/lyrics/), I couldn't find it. It remains a mystery...

And Jorge... not sure on exactly when they'll be back to New England, all they said was "dead of winter". Hopefully February or March.

As for the EP, it's self-titled and self-released... not even sure you can still buy it (which I'd gladly do!). I got lucky and found it online...
brad | Homepage | 11.15.04 - 1:11 pm | #

Thank you so much for the review plus audio files.

Those of us in the D.C. area are Arcade Fire-less for now (hopefully they'll come by in '05).

To note: At least half of the songs from the EP used to be downloadable from the official website so they're probably making the file-sharing rounds.
Lee | Homepage | 11.15.04 - 1:22 pm | #

Can't express enough gratitude for the taping... I'm hearing them live for the first time as I type this. Sounds like they really capture the atmospherics of the album, even in a club. Got my tickets for Wednesday night in Columbus. WOOT!!!!11
Milo | Homepage | 11.15.04 - 2:46 pm | #

My pleasure, Milo... this recording doesn't even do their live show justice. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did...
brad | Homepage | 11.15.04 - 3:13 pm | #

By all means get that EP. At 7 songs and a half-hour of music, it is what my friend so sagely dubbed "what we use to call a Stooges Album."

That is how I first fell in love with them and the "Woodlands National Anthem" should be adopted by some country (New Canada !?!).

Jorge, just knock and the door is open unto you.

Hi there,

Thanks for the great review of the Arcade Fire live show and the subsequent recording you made..

I live in Australia, where I am 100% sure that none of our radio stations have given ANY airplay to, nor likely have heard of, Arcade Fire.

I purchased their album direct from their website and love it - I had it on MP3 for months prior, but it is so good had to buy the real thing.

I can't wait to listen to these live MP3's, and also hope that Australia someday realises the talent of this collective!

Keep up the great work...
Adam | Homepage | 11.15.04 - 4:17 pm | #

I was at this show, and I can't thank you enough for recording it. With regard to their return to Boston, their website says they'll be back in the cities they sold out in January, which is even sooner than I'd hoped.
Joe | Homepage | 11.15.04 - 4:53 pm | #

I, too, was at this show and can't thank you enough for posting the mp3s and the pictures (i'm the tuft of obnoxious red hair in the front row). win said that they'd be back in the "dead of winter," and you can bet that i'll be right back in the front row again -- dancing like crazy to every single song.
chris | Homepage | 11.15.04 - 6:29 pm | #

thanks for the mp3s! They break and fill my heart...Missed them at the soldout show at Cornell.
marty | Homepage | 11.15.04 - 6:51 pm | #

thanks for the mp3s! i'm seeing them next month, can't wait.

do you know what they were selling at the merchandise table?
evan | Homepage | 11.15.04 - 7:27 pm | #

seven inches, their old 7-song ep, funeral on compact disc, $1 buttons, and a really pricey (eighteen dollar) shirt with the artwork from the 7" on it.
chris | Homepage | 11.15.04 - 7:51 pm | #

they were selling the EP at the show?! argh! i purposefully avoided the merch table 'cuz i didn't have any cash with me. rats.

hey, if anyone out there is seeing them soon, and feels like picking it up for me, i'd be much in your debt (and will gladly pay ya, plus send along a better-sounding disc of this show )

Aww. We peeps in Europe are really really missing out there. Damn.
I hope they don't burn out before arriving here...
That CD is a truly great album, an instant classic and I don't say this lightly. Thanks Brad for all this, you lucky soul!

Links 2 and 3 are broken but I guess this share is awesome enough as it is. Thanks millions once again.
Mat | Homepage | 11.16.04 - 6:20 am | #

That's so strange... the links are working fine for me.

I have a suspicion that it's the special characters (the umlaut over the 'i' in Laika, the accents over Annee and Lumiere, and the umlaut over the 'i' in Haiti).

I'll just removed all those, so you can try again... let me know if it works...
brad | Homepage | 11.16.04 - 8:10 am | #

Hey Brad... Awesome....

though I can't get Haiti to download for some reason!

Hi, just popping in here, ANYBODY KNOW THE NAME OF THE UNKNOWN COVER SONG?!

I can't find it anywhere.
Dave | Homepage | 11.16.04 - 5:32 pm | #

Ummmmm, The Arcade Fire live is as close to religion as I've had in awhile. Unlike the rest of y'all the record didn't click for me until AFTER I saw them live. Since then I've been on this band with all the zealotry of the newly converted.

Molto Grazi for the great live recording (the live version of Wake Up makes the hair on my arms stand on end . . . seriously).
factcitizen | Homepage | 11.16.04 - 6:39 pm | #

Haven't listened yet (I've got other thingws on my hands right now) but I do greatly appreciate this. Their debut full-length is one of the greatest things I've heard in a LONG time. Thanks again.

P.S. Anyone willing to send me their EP?

katie | Homepage | 11.16.04 - 11:56 pm | #

wow, these recordings and your summary (and lordy, the pictures!) have all gotten me very excited to see them in los angeles soon. i've become sort of musically jaded over the past year because of working at a radio station; i'm glad to read that so many other people (up there in the comments) have stopped by to pick up the live tracks! thanks so much for putting in that little extra effort while being at the show.

kathy | Homepage | 11.17.04 - 1:28 am | #

i was at the NYC show.

the "leonard cohen cover" from that night and the "neil young cover" on this site are the same song.

i read somewhere that it's all a joke and that this is actually a new Arcade Fire song. don't believe anything Win Butler says onstage.
Andrew | Homepage | 11.17.04 - 1:56 am | #

Thanks Brad, for the great review and for the songs!

I saw them play in Itaca the night before they had broken keyboards but they played on like troopers.

I did a brief interview with Win on my site
http://www.kevchino.com

This was posted on their site:
"For all you folks in sold-out cities, we'll be coming back through in January (at least for like San Francrisco and L.A. and Boston and New York and others?). So don't worry your pretty little heads about robbing tickets from the elderly."

I was at the Halifax show a week prior. Saw Win by the merch table and avoided going over and babbling half-drunkenly.

These tracks are incredible. As for the show itself: Hallelujah. We've got a messiah. Packed house. The kids love it.

The band oughta come back to Halifax before we lose the venue they played at.

i went to the columbus and newport, ky. shows and this band is the coolest live show on earth right now. lots of fun, and they're all nice people.

they played a song at southgate after covering the talking heads cover and it sounded like win said 'this is a wolf parade song' which is another canadian band. the song sounded REALLY familiar. it could have been because they played it 2 nights before but i'm not sure if it was the same song. in columbus win said it was 'a new song'...he started out playing acoustic guitar then his string broke, so he grabbed an electric. it was a really good song and i'm sure it's not on this show recording...if anyone knows what it was please let me know. thanks!!
mark | Homepage | 11.21.04 - 9:53 pm | #

Yeah, I'm not 100% positive, but I think that that Burning Bridges, Broken Hearts song is actually called A Serenade to Basco. If it isn't, please correct me, but I'm almost positive.

Kurt Wagner | Homepage | 11.22.04 - 6:57 pm | #

yeah, he said that bridges/hearts was a Leonard Cohen song at the Cleveland show too. but like the rest, I couldn't find anything online that seemed to resemble it. Quite good though.

chris-p | Homepage | 11.24.04 - 2:21 pm | #

well, that's pretty damn random now, isn't it?

although, it being pitchfork, i could have guessed it wouldn't be an entirely positive review.

then again... listening to that track doesn't come close to being there.
brad | Homepage | 11.25.04 - 7:13 am | #

you said it all, brother. i caught them in Cincinnati, and had a serious case of the freak outs, grinning like a fool the whole time. i've only felt so utterly transcendent one or two other times.

Saw these guys in Milwaukee on Wednesday, and it was just as amazing as the show detailed above. Thanks much for the mp3s. Incidentally, "Burning Bridges..." got attributed to Joe Strummer that night. I had no reason to think he was kidding until I saw this site.

Thanks for posting this show. Used to live in Connecticut and visited Boston often, so it's nice to find a TT's show of my new favorite band ever. Just saw them in Milwaukee and hope to find that show.
BTW, I also heard him say the burning bridges song is a Joe Strummer song, but have yet to be able to find it anywhere.

sorry, the red-eye reduction didnt work too well on my little canon, but the band was extremely photogenic. also, i was a little unclear on the band's current lineup--was that win butler on bass? and who was the drummer?

Great pictures Brad. Just letting you know how much the friends and family of the band appreciate your blog entry. Tim e-mails us almost every day, and they are working really hard right now. I love how simple and yet complex this band can be at the same time. The lyrics remind you of what it was like to be a kid, and then the music just blows you away. Thanks again, Krista, Rockwood, Ontario.

Man alive...certainly one of the finest shows I've seen in my life! Taxi, I was at the 400 too, I was one of the jerks sitting up on the partition. I don't have their CD yet, and the only reason I checked the show out was because of Haley Bonar (I heard lots of gripes about the booking, it seemed a bit off to me as well, but I like both Haley and The Arcade Fire) Anyhow, MPLS show rocked, I hope they come back to a bigger venue that has better sightlines (Triple Rock, Whole, 7th St, or maybe even 1st Ave) Thanks for these mp3s Brad-dude.

Thanks for the live recording! I saw them up in Bar Harbor Maine, the day before halloween in this old-castle like building at the college of atlantic. It was a private show, but they let in a hundred guests in who signed up via internet and it was AWESOME. They played in the foyer which was just beautiful (old woodwork, high ceilings), and the sound, much like TT's, was unreal. The best show I've seen in years.

Saw them at the Logan Square Auditorium in Chicago on Thanksgiving. My kid sister insisted on getting there hours early so we could be down front; boy oh boy did I thank her afterwards. I was floored, like everyone else.

All that's to say, thanks for putting the images and MP3s on the Web, especially since they didn't do the Talking Heads cover in Chicago. I'd have taped if I had the equipment, but this is phenomenal as it is.

It was your page that convinced me to go see them as they swung thru my state last month. Even though the show didn't start until 11pm on a weeknight (what can I say, I'm getting old), I went and was soooo glad I did. I tried to check my expectations at the door figuring they'd never match the hype, but they blew it away. thanks!! -- jason

Thanks for setting up this page. Great job. I went to see Arcade Fire last night in San Francisco at the Great American Music Hall - a holy, deco-era place to see music. Suffice to say, it was awesome. Best show I've seen since in many, many years. A beautiful wall of sound and energy that just sweeps you up.

This was the second of three straight sold-out shows, and their massive buzz precedes them. The crowd was a mix of devout fans (like me), SF hipsters, SF wannabe hipsters, and those who thought this was where they were supposed to be. Some idiot cried out in the first couple songs ("show us why you're so good"). The band kept mentioning how it was like a museum, hipsters too cool to dance, and such. By the end, I mean it, the whole place was bouncing. As they should be.

Brilliant recording. I just saw them last night in Austin, TX and was blown away. Conditions were horrible (small outside stage with obnoxiously lound dance club next door), but they prevailed and performed smashingly.

Haha, they're coming to the UK :D Seeing them March 17th, second date, the first date sold out a day after I found out about it, but needed to gather some money together, and then when I had, they were gone, then another date appeared, and a smile was gained. Well, two, I got the Brian Wilson album as well today.

Go figure the day I find this page is the day after the files are taken down. Are these going back up ever? Anyone with a big heart and a gmail account care to e-mail me a couple of files? I would love to have "Wake Up", "#1", "Headlights", and "No Cars Go"

Oh, and I saw their recent show at the Roxy after originally discovering the band when they opened for the Unicorns... phenomenal.

I can't remember the last time I've been so excited about a band, I feel like i'm back in college.

For the past 5-6 years, I've fallen off the music awareness chart. Then started listening to the STrokes, and Franz Ferdinand, then the Dears.

Then I heard these guys, and there was something very different - something very optimistic, and real, something kind of romantic and truthful. Being also from Montreal i was very intrigued, i listened to their music, and it blew me away.

Your review was great, as well as photos and recordings. I hope to see them soon.

Listening to them makes you feel pretty good inside, i wonder why

Thankyou so very much for making this available to share. Here in Australia our first taste of this unbelievable band was the release of Funeral last week, along with being the "Album of the Week" on the national youth radio network JJJ.

This band is so freakishly good, hopefully they'll make the trip down here sometime soon.

Until then, I'm loading this onto my IPOD and blowing the speakers in the car!

Thanks again for sharing.

Thanks so much for recording this. The Paris show this week was sold out before I could get a ticket, but they're coming back in May. I know where I'll be. Thanks again.

I just came across Arcade Fire over the weekend. Found your live set today.
Great recording. Thanks for sharing.
I've posted a link on my blog to your post, as well as a couple MP3s from Funeral.

I'm checking out the rest of your blog now. Great place you have here.

Sorry but Cowboys Fringants, Grimskunk, Chango Family are all different sounding montreal bands and all have live shows which are raved about.

Arcade Fire reminds me of a cleaner, rockier Gadji-Gadjo and too much of Sam Roberts who couldnt book a gig in town to save his life and now has virgins served on a platter.

I still prefer a band like Grimskunk but its nice to see that another band has made a bigger impact abroad than at home.

Of course unilingual anglos arent probably aware that this province has an amazing amount of spanish influenced bands which are the real next thing.

As a californian, I must say I was impressed by seeing so much mestizo music here make it to south america
but south america has given a lot back like Lhasa de Sela, Tomas Jensen, Paolo Ramos.

point is, the next big thing here aint gonna be english. the sheer numbers against it being english are phenomenal...
