Period on the outside of the marks is, of course, wrong. In the UK, it is a matter of choice based on context. Here, not so much. Their way makes more sense. So I guess you can affect a certain British-ness to your typesetting if you prefer. In fact, I believe old typesetting convention is the only reason we Yanks continue to follow the "always in rule." This is the kind of thing I expect pbdotc and BJL to weigh in on. |

Joe, you nailed it. The UK metasyntax wonks at Reuters, BBC, etc love to scratch their chins and ponder the placement of the end mark as juxtapositiond with the quotemark. In the U.S., it's an ironclad rule for journalists at least, the punctuation always goes inside the quotemark. Our high instance of British insurgents, however, will always mean instances of UK usage abound, giving life to the dying cause. Sometime I wish those selfsame wonks would spend more time getting their facts right than arguing the finer points of why an end mark is not always bound by the tyranny of a quote mark. |

Hans, it must be a tipping point because I and my cubby mates busted with at least sixteen brokeback jokes yesterday and holy smarkle were they funny. I'm not sure if they're as funny via haloscan but somebody said yesterday, "The damn boss is brokebackin me." |
