let's ask joe morgan

Scoring runs
A run is scored when a player has touched all four bases in order, proceeding counterclockwise around them. They need not be touched on the same play; a batter may remain safely on a base while play proceeds and attempt to advance on a later play.

A run is not scored in these circumstances:

If the last out of the inning is a force out
If the last out of an inning is a flyout

Finn's right I guess ... there is no error on the play by rule, if the force out was made? The baserunning blunder was more egregious than the fielding bungle and therefore no error was made.

That was a lot of fun last night. I was happy we got numbers to play. Plus there was some yeoman's work done on the part of Koi---, er, "Bango", who went and bought a bat. Good onya.

The runs counts as it was scored before the 3rd out was recorded. It is scored a error on the 2nd baseman & fielders choice.

nah, the run doesn't count. if the dude never made it to third it's considered a force out and it doesn't matter when the runner crossed the plate.

That was some good softball. Everyone should come next week.

e) There is no "rule" that can be applied to determine whether the run counts. My understanding is that (as a rule) you all don't follow traditional rules. Players can get out by hitting a home run, you drink beer while you play, and the outfield sometimes includes soccer players. Maybe a new rule is in order?... e.g., When everyone is so drunk (or whatever) that both teams forget how to play softball, it's a do-over.

But the dude made it to 1st....

the dude making it to first doesn't matter if another (forced) runner was unable to reach his base safely. had there been no man on first, and the runner from second was heading to third because he felt like it, and he was tagged out after the run scored, the run would count.

I refer you to the saga of Fred "Bonehead" Merkle...

--->

yeah, that was some good last minute softball. come back, floks --the field is a callin' ya!

Oh, so THAT's what Merkle's boner was! Hans gets the Genius points.

The answer is B. I will split the points with BJL when he confirms. Thank you.

i say smoker gets the points

i say i get some points seeing as the rule expressed here echoes that which i argued on Sunday when the event actually happened.

Thank you for your answers, I get the points.

I offered the challenge; I award the points. The points go to Hans for the only answer which truly convinced me. By choosing a historically famous play whose details aligned closely with this one, Hans offered the best answer.

allow me to extend my hand and say "gimme some points, too" for summarizing the rule in effect - which should be the most convincing answer - but also that Hans' should get points for providing a real-world example

when the alleged event happened i too was on the field of play. i mediated and prevented the situation from escalating and coming to blows. you never know when you are dealing w/ pbdotc...that's gotta be worth some points, too.

...not to mention that i was always on the right side of the argument, holding steadfast to 'no runs can score when the inning ends on a force out'.

If you can earn verbungle points for enduring and/or mediating the adventures of pbdotc, I should immediately be awarded 1,000,000,000 points.
