2 things:
1) i'm too am totally disgusted by the Yankees Caligula-like spending during an economic massacre. ESPECIALLY seeing as Bloomberg helped them fleece the city via false property estimates and tax exempt bonds. Add that to the stolen Bronx park-land for a "needed" new stadium and you really see while folks consider us the evil empire. Even more disgusting is that all this happens while Gov.Patterson cuts social services and education in NYC. gross..
2) don't forget Oakley's D ..when was the last time the Knicks had a legit top-notch help defender who also locked down the post?

Hans, I bet you don't have the Charles Oakley autograph I got you anymore. I was at Mickey Mantle's on 57th with Jonathan Lynne and Oak was at the bar with a fine ass lady. He and I haven't really kept in touch since that night.
The Yankees will go undefeated next year.

I agree with DLee regarding the stadium, but as much as I hate the Yankees, I think Posnanski is right.
The thing that is kind of funny to me is that now the Yankees have spent like 1/2 billion in the offseason, thy won't pony up a cent more than 10 million to resign Pettite for one year. It is a mistake that really might haunt them, but hey.
BTW-Hans-do you remember when we had the remarkably stupid argument in 2006 on these very pages about the Yankees? The issue you most took issue with was my claim that the Yankees are the most hated team of all time in any sport. A year later a poll was taken on ESPN.com, and more than 100,000 people voted. The topic was "what is the team you hate most in the history of sports?" The overwhelming answer-the Yankees 1996-2007 (by a large % over the current Patriots). I think a lot of this has to do with the gaudy spending. In retrospect, however, after thinking about the issues that Posnanski discusses, I think I hate them less. That stadium deal, however...

I am not going to get into another argument about the Yanks...but which other teams were in the poll? If the 2002 Jacksonville Jaguars weren't in there, it is not a valid poll.

that's a really long article about the Yankees. much too long for those of us with a gnat-like attention span. i'll just guess what it's about...
the Yankees are easy to dislike because they are/have been champions. if they spent big $$$ and NEVER won a Series, nobody would care about them - they'd just be laughingstocks.

Yeah-but my point was I disagree with the poll now! Anyway, I am sure you can find the poll on line. It had the 90's Knicks, the current Red Sox and Patriots, the 70's Flyers, the 70's Raiders, blah blah.

Oh, and Finn-I agree. Much of the hate is the past success. I think people have softened on the hate of late because lately the more the Yankees spend, the worse they do. One reason I think people are so upset about this offseason is that they are afraid that the spending will actually lead to a championship.

I just think the 2002 jaguars were so damn hatable. Their smug touchdown dances, their lack of attention to personal hygiene, and good luck trying to get one of those dudes to pick up a dinner check.
I fucking hate them.

I also like that of the 5 most theoretically hatable teams ever, 2 of them are my teams.

actually not really sure the Knicks were on there, but I think they were (there were so many teams). I like that I loved them so much when everyone else hated them-made me feel misunderstood in a good way.

i think the yankees literally paid $100M too much for teixeria.
can that kind of overspending really be sustainable?

you think Teix is worth 10mil a year? why? I agree it is a lot for a 1b, but his value is way more than that, and the Yankees really need him.
If the Yankees still cannot come close to winning a WS, they will have to eventually scrap this approach and pay more attention to draft/scouting/development and stop giving out crazy long contracts that kill their flexibility.

tex should have got something like 5 years 80 million .... that's around $16M per year .... still nuts for a 1B but somewhat attached to reality.
the guy is a career .290 -- good average but not a $20+m guy
