Sorry to see you are having computer problems. I went through the same thing some months ago. Now I back up to an external drive and, in addition, burn my photos onto a DVD.
Mac tip of the day;
Hold down the "T" key on startup. If you get a firewire symbol shortly thereafter you can connect your laptop to another (firewire equipped) computer and your's will be seen as an external firewire drive. Then you can just move all your data over. Gawd bless Macs.
This will only work if your HD has lost it's OS, if it fails to spin you're sol.
If it fails to spin up give it a rest (somewhere cool), maybe even a blast of liquid nitrogen. . . . you might get one moe shot.
