"voter-approved initiative" Heaven forbid this state EVER does what the voters approve of. Like 187! I hate this state.

Jenn that's one reason why I moved from the Silicon Valley to Las Vegas. Less bull-pucky to deal with. My question is if minority admissions are down across the state or if those students went to smaller schools like SDSU, San Jose State, Chico State etc... And if they did, are they more successful there?

I teach at a place with a similar admissions policy (which definitely not the norm in British institutions). The result: A lot of unprepared people who have no business doing a degree. They've put the cart before the horse and many of my students would benefit from a basic essay writing course before indulging their fantasy of becoming the next petrocelli.
The other problem with the "lets admit anyone" approach is when grades come out. We may have to let the unprepared in, but once in, they have to pass exams like anyone else.
So instead of giving people who otherwise "don't have a chance", affirmation action college admission policies set people up to fail. Surely that is far more damaging to a person's self-esteem than telling the student that they have to learn to walk before they can run.

Kris: Sounds like a perfect summary of the problems with affirmative action. Thanks for commenting!
