I didn't know who Gary Jules was prior to Idol. Adam Lambert, Mad Mad World, etc. We watch it for entertainment only, but I did know the song well from my Tears for Fears days. So I've caught a few clips of Gary's voice. I don't find a Cat Steven's reference on point, but Gary does seem to have modeled his voice EXACTLY after an American Christian rock singer that I grew up listening to. Uncanny. It's remarkable, I keep hearing these copycat artists getting heaps of praise. Why can't people be inspired without trying to actually sound EXACTLY like the artist that inspired them. I just encountered another artist on a late night show the other night who presented themselves as being so original but the lead singer actually was completely copying the iconic voice of the artist over there in Northern Europe. Gee Whiz. Not to mention another young lady from the States who is raved about for being so original but I know for a fact who she modeled her voice after - another Northern European artist. Hey, what the heck, no one in the States or in the secular community will know, right?
Originality? Not in this listener's opinion.
