Couldn't the court lock him up for contempt (turning up drunk)?

There must be some rational explanation. He'd probably run out of booze and the parrot kept saying "Gin and Coke! Gin and Coke!"

I too thought the court should have locked him up for contempt - being drunk might be ok, by modern liberal standards, but to appear before magistrates wearing a football shirt was unforgiveable ...

Legally, contempt isn't a runner in these circumstances.

Are we sure the parrot was dead - and not simply resting?

It sounds as thogh he should be in a secure mental hospital. There is something seriously wrong with him, and he may kill a human being next.

Yet if he got a place at the chicken plant he could decapitate fowl all day and never be noticed by anyone.

Cruelty to animals is insufficient reason to lock someone up -- worse happens in abbotoirs every day of the week. But if he's mentally unbalanced and a danger to other people, that might be a reason.
