Thanks for that. I was most interested in the re-offending rates, but couldn't see those figures anywhere. Has anyone else spotted them?

"Re-offending rates are high – 67% are reconvicted within two years of release. Among men aged 18-21 the rate is 78%.", according to the BBC.
The one fact that really gets my back up though is "Nowhere in Western Europe jails more of its population than England and Wales, where 143 people per 100,000 are in prison." This is such a partial truth as to be completely misleading. As can be seen from http://www.civitas.org.uk/data/
p...risonEU2000.htm the UK jails so many people BECAUSE WE HAVE SO MUCH CRIME! Look at the number of crimes per 1000 population. In fact the prisoners per 1000 crimes is 4 TIMES LOWER THAN SPAIN and BELOW the EU average! Funny how the Beeb doesnt mention that eh?

Cheers, Mark.
So Michael Howard's "Prison Works" mantra should be qualified to "Prison Works very nearly 1/3 of the time".
Draft 'em. Not necessarily into the British military; I hear the Yanks have a recruiting crisis at the moment.
