It's not often that you see the words "Kingsmill", and "luxury foods" in such close proximity.
I couldn't see the point of this story either.

Are they saying that Charles Bronson is too evil to be entitled to a pair of spectacles?

Gravatar Since the Sun thinks Broadmoor (and prison) is so luxurious, perhaps its journalists and proprietor should be sent there. Permanently.

Gravatar On a not entirely unrelated note, I see that it has gone unreported outside the specialist railway press that a former Network Rail employee with a grudge who sabotaged signalling equipment on several occasions has been imprisoned for ten years for criminal damage. If that isn't a substantial enough sentence for the tabloids then God only knows what is, but it seems that saying something positive about our court system wouldn't sell as many newspapers.

Gravatar "On a not entirely unrelated note, I see that it has gone unreported outside the specialist railway press"
The BBC certainly reported it, and I'm sure it wasn't alone.

Gravatar Yes, hyperbole is repugnant. Apropos of which, I can't find any of your 'quotes' in the linked-to story.

Gravatar With respect, Bystander, the only time that I am aware of what is said in the Sun, is when I read about it here!

(I read the Sun website most days - it is well to know your enemy!) - Bystander

Gravatar I remember spending an evening with a Sun "Journalist" 20+ years ago.

We enjoyed an excellent expense account meal while making up "quotes" from the "public" who were "incensed" about something or other.

We also had an idea about complaining to Tetley about a teabag with less than 2000 perforations on it... the Sun ran the "story" and even Blue Peter picked it up!

Gravatar "I have said before that the Sun has done more than anyone to corrode public understanding of the criminal justice system. Its rants had a malign influence on Tony Blair's policies, and I hope that Gordon Brown has more sense than to pander to the paper's disgusting agenda."

Bystander, many would agree, but let's be realistic about this. The Sun is in the business of selling copies. It's certainly not in the business of acting socially responsibly or passing considered and balanced comment. Like so many other such 'newspapers' the name of the game is to titilate and sell. If it can generate a 'scandal' out of nothing then that's exactly what it will do.

As to the 'journalists' who 'include some of our brightest and best graduates' the the 'proprietor', who 'claims to be a born-again Christian', your assumption must be that they have some sort of morality or conscience. Why? Academic success or intellectual ability has never been an indicator of moral integrity, and a 'professed' religion has never stood in the way of profound turpitude.

As is so often the case, the clever and rich have very few scruples.

Gravatar The most offensive thing about the Sun being run by port-swilling Oxbridge toffs is that the good folks who read the Sun settling down to a morning cuppa are being treated like mugs.

It's the taxes of Britain's working men and women that paid for their expensive education. Someone should tell them to get a real job!.

Gravatar Wonder when the last time the Sun ran a story deploring the standard of food in NHS hospitals? After all Broadmoor is one!
And if a "council" is set up to represent the patients ot is by definition going to make requests!
Never let fact get in the way of reporting.....

Gravatar "whose journalists include some of our brightest and best graduates".

You cannot be serious. I see no evidence of a GCSE failed between them, let alone a worthwhile qualification.

Gravatar I kid you not Steve. There is fierce competition for a Sun graduate traineeship and only truly exceptional candidates will get in. That's what depresses me - these men and women know the truth but write distorted articles because their editor tells them to.

Gravatar "The most offensive thing about the Sun being run by port-swilling Oxbridge toffs is that the good folks who read the Sun settling down to a morning cuppa are being treated like mugs..."

Umm. If these good folks are spending money to read the Sun, as opposed to looking at the pictures, then they ARE mugs. The remedy is in their own hands.

Gravatar Steve, don't judge the skills of Sun hacks by what you read - judge them by the newspapers' sales figures, relative to the other national dailies.

It was only a few years ago Trevor Kavanah was the thought to be the most clued-up political operator inside the House or out. The fact that he churned out the sort of guff you wouldn't line your hamster's cage with is neither here nor there.

Gravatar Last year the Sun was calling for our disused barracks to be converted into concentration camps. This is de rigueur Sun filth.
