Jesse--no, really, tell us how you really feel! Don't hold back!

HOW FUCKING APPROPRIATE that this piece of inhuman shit departs our mortal world on the 4th of July.

Gilly waited for this day. Too bad he's not around to kick it down here on Earth with us, but in the great Hereafter, I betcha a few million people of color and AIDS victims are putting on one hell of a street party.

Gravatar One less fevered ego tainting our collective unconscious. Good. I'm glad he's dead. I hope he suffered first.

I hope Bill Hicks will come back now.

Gravatar Great post.

I think it was you, when Russert died, who mentioned Helms as one of the few who are evil enough who deserves no respect EVER, even on the day of their death. I thought that was excellently well put then and totally agree with your, um, eulogy today.

I have a special hard spot in my heart for Helms, because he was running one of his sleaze-laden campaigns for re-election during my first year of law school in North Carolina in 1984. Being a native New Yawkah as I am, my sojourn in that state was one of the nastiest eye-opening shocks of my entire life, for many reasons -- not least of which was the fact that I had classmates who voted for that devil.

His opponent that year was Governor Jim Hunt, a southern conservative democrat if there ever was one -- and of course it was the same year Reagan ran for reelection against Walter Mondale. I shall never forget those sneering, sliming TV ads: "Jim Hunt -- a Mondale Liberal."
"Jim Hunt -- Too Liberal for North Carolina."

Rot in hell, you old bastard.

Gravatar With the passing of the hideous piece of offal called Jesse Helms this Fourth of July 2008 this planet called Earth has become more inhabitable and a wee bit brighter and freer.

Gravatar btw, may I ask if any of you folks here went to HCHS with Steve Gilliard? I went there as well, graduated 2 years before he did. Was not blessed to know him, but my bestest lifelong friend, who was president of Senior Chorus, fondly remembers him as someone who always showed up for rehearsal. : )

Gravatar good riddance to that sanctimonious bigot. have fun in hell, Jesse, you SOB

Gravatar Looks like my previous comment disappeared into the ether, so I'll just repeat what I said there: When he meets his God, may he be judged by Him in the same manner and measure which he used when judging others. I think that says it all...

(BTW, at least 90% of the comments on CNN.com have been along the lines of "burn in hell!")

Gravatar I hate to speak ill of the dead, but I have to wonder if in due course we will now find out that he had a second family of another race kept carefully hidden.

Gravatar add Rush Limbaugh to your list of despicable people

Gravatar As Roy Zimmerman said, singing about Helms' death about 15 years back:

He died like a hero in the drizzling rain
(yes he did, Jesse did)
When the weight of his skull finally crushed his brain
(oh, yes he did)

The whole Jesse Helms Song is appropriately commemorative of the occasion.

Gravatar Damn, that's terrible news, Jesse.

What an awful shame.

Here we are, riding the descending arc of Hubbert's curve, like an ice-skier heading for a pile of boulders, and now we can expect an anthracite shortage as well.

It'll take some extraordinarily hot coal to roast Jesse Helms over, down in hell.

Gravatar Wow, Mrs. R.

This was written in 1993??

Now that's thinking ahead.

Gravatar so that's why they're shooting off fireworks

Gravatar Now I'm drinking the GOOD stuff.

Gravatar Now I'm drinking the GOOD stuff.
