best wishes for a healthy recovery for your dad, jesse.
One FYI, make sure you do some reading on post heart surgery depression. My uncle had a hard time with depression afterwards. There is a lot they can do for the recovery period, but just wanted you to know if you haven't read about it already.

My grandfather has something like this but he's 89 so he doesn't get a new valve. (He's OK with that.)

Is he Jewish, if so, can I have his Hebrew name for the Mishabayrach?
On an unrelated note, I know that I should not brag, but I can't resist:
I just got called a racist by Ramesh Ponnuru on a blog post on The Corner.
It appears that he took offense at my blog post on the rumors that Time Magazine was hiring him titled, "Conservatives Outsourcing Punditry to India".
I've made the little time

Thank you very much to everyone for their support.
No Matthew, my dad isn't Jewish. But I'm certain he'll accept prayers from anyone.

Jesse, I went to college in Denton and my mother was in the very hospital you mention several times. A big, well-run facility. I'll be sending you energy directly. And mitral valve repairs are very common, with strong positive outcomes, which I know you know.

Sending prayers for the speedy recovery of your dad.
My husband had to have his very badly damaged aortic valve replaced about 15 years ago due to a childhood bout with rheumatic fever (don't EVER ignore a possible strep throat especially in children).
He received one of St Jude Medical's plastic composite butterfly valves. While he does take coumadin regularly to prevent possible blood clots around the valve (although his cardiologist said there has never been a clinical study to prove it is necessary), he had a very fast and uneventful recuperation period. I am sure you dad will be up on his feet and starting to move around shortly.
Jim does serve a purpose in life now, though. Two or three times a year, the Fire Dept brings around their new trainees to familiarize themselves with what this valve sounds like so they won't panic during a real emergency. I can't help but laugh that my old man reminds me of the crocodile in Peter Pan who swallowed the clock so you could always hear him moving around.

lectric lady --
Thank you.
I used to teach paramedic students and basic EMTs. A&P was a semester long course for the medic students.
I also taught ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) for several years at the University of Arkansas Medical School for the med students, physicians, nurses, medics, and other assorted folks who needed the seminar.
In fact, my current primary care physician for my children and and I, went through my student for both CPR & ACLS training almost 30 years ago when he was a med student. *laughs*
He's an amazing family practice and sports medicine doc. So much so, that in addition to his regular practice, he's been the doctor for the Seattle Seahawks for years.
Anyway, that's my bit of trivia for the night.
Thanks for what you said. Always glad to hear what I wrote communicated clearly, and most especially glad to hear so when it comes to medical stuff. *smiles*

I can't help but ask about that crazy heart diagram with the three aortas and extra veins... what is it supposed to be, a Klingon?

Everyone --
There's a new update posted.
Kim C --
The diagram is very accurate. There's only one aorta shown.
You may be confused by how the aorta splits up into ascending and descending branches, and that the pulmonary vein carries oxygenated blood (and thus looks red) back to the left heart.

Jesse,
If you need any help with your dad during his recovery let me know.
I had double heart valve replacement due to a leaking heart valve and a stenotic heart valve - aortic and pulmonary.
Also, my site / blog might help you guys out.
Cheers,
Adam
