Every Sunday when the picture of an old, winning Yankees group shot falls out of the Times, I think of Steve. I wish Steve had recovered, seen Sicko, and then given us his own rundown of healthcare in America. When, after the blackout, the heat went ON in my apartment building and we simultaneously lost hot water, I thought of Jen (as I do whenever I see a ham). I would have loved his continuing takes on Rudy's and Bloomberg's campaigns.

Glad to see a phoenix rise from the ashes. It was so sad to go to the old site and see that picture of Steve and think I'll never read a new post by him again - I couldn't get over his feisty voice not being there anymore. It's like when you know in your gut that you have a bug in your web-page code but you keep clicking refresh in the hope that that action alone will magically make it look right again. Now you guys have done the right thing: no more magic thinking, just time to start kicking Republican (and Yankee) butt again.

As a survivor of a system wide infection, stroke and bionic, aortic valve, open heart surgery, I can tell you that I am half the man I use to be.
For what it is worth, Steve does not have to go thru this living hell of pain, meds, doctors, hospitals, outrageous costs and the toll it takes on family members.
Steve is spared this pain and for that we can be grateful.

Long time reader of TNB, first time commenter - I was pretty stunned to hear of Steve's passing, and like many of his fans have been feeling a sort of void where his voice once raged ever since his health went south.
I love the fact that you guys stepped up to the plate in his honor on TNB, and are taking it one step further with this venture. I wish you all the best of luck and look forward to where it all goes from here.

The News Blog during Steve's absence, and I felt proud and embarrassed at the same time. It just felt so small - I was a midget among giants, in the shadow of a giant. I was the six-year-old who got called to pitch late in the game. "Come on, kid. You're up. Don't fuck this up for the rest of us." And sure, I went out there and threw my best stuff, but I still felt like a six-year-old in a baggy uniform.

It's very important for you guys to carry on and keep the News Blog flag flying. You are doing precisely what all newspapers should do but don't - you are crafting a consistent editorial policy.
I don't mean some kind of lockstep position thing. The spirit of Gilly's blog should continue and the areas he emphasized should continue to be emphasized. The News Blog is a major blog and we're still in the infancy of blogging. Suppose paper prices go up 30%. Suppose state governments decide to make every citizen manage their state taxes and licenses, etc., online to keep from building new courthouses. Many things could drive millions toward real NEWS blogs other than elections, etc.
In a personal sense Steve Gilliard was such a vital voice in political blogging that I am still in utter denial. I was still clicking his Kos link every day or two hoping something like this would occur. I'm also glad that his family appears to have been positively affected by the encomia that his leaving us produced.
Be provocative. Test the limits and don't be afraid to go too far sometimes. I always thought that was the meaning of the boxing gloves and the WW II bomber. You don't go so far as to become just another screamer - there are lots of those - but you hit'em where it hurts.

What a joy. I actually teared up when I got over here via Crooks. I was one of those who checked at the news blog everyday even after the black page went up. Been missing you LM, Doc and Hubris. What a great tribute to Steve legacy.

I was an infrequent commentor over at the News Blog. I always loved his hit the nail on the head analysis of whatever was going on. When he got sick the last time, I had a sinking feeling, but hoped against hope that he would pull through. I have clicked on the old page for days now, hoping for the promised memorial page, or at least that the old posts would reappear. I even went to his old site and clicked on the comments in the hope there was a memorial thread.
Now I have found this place, and hope to eventually find my way onto the masthead too. Right now, I am thinking about going back for my bachelor's degree. (I have an Associate). Before Steve, I might have gone for some other semi-practical degree, but now I want to be a writer like he was.
So far it looks good here.
Damn, all teared up again, missing Steve so much, this is good news. keep on keeping on.

I tried to comment earlier but haloscan wasn't happening. It was good to read that I wasn't the only one going to the old site everyday hoping that something like this would jump off. I also visited technorati each day, typed in Steve's name searching desperately for news. I have to say that the blogosphere was pretty empty for me as I perused other places. So when I hit paydirt at technorati I felt like I had hit the number when I came over and found everyone.
Still miss Steve, but his spirit... oh does it ever live on!!!!!

What a treat it is finding that the work Steve began will be carried on. I am saddened both by the passing of Steve and the fact that my finances were never well enough to toss even a few sheckles Steve's way. I found you guys on the 4th, and am only now able to post a comment now, 40 + hours in 4 work days tend to leave you a bit tired. Well you are booked and placed in my history so I can quickly call up the site, as one more eloquent than me once said: "Let's Roll!!!"
BTW, if there's ever serious interest in doing a dead tree version of The News Blog, there's a lot of good Print On Demand stuff (POD) that's getting just even better. I saw some of what's available at the BEA show and we're looking at something that is definitely nice to have on the shelf. You can't get Smith-sewn backs quite yet, but you can get a decent glued hardback (and paperback, obviously)
The major hassle would be editing the manuscript into shape. Any volunteers?
When I first found the NewsBlog, I was so happy that I had found the motherlode of information I couldn't find anywhere else. It was the first place to go for the real information.
