Andy, thank you. While on vacation in Munich in 2006 I had some Australian tourists ask me if I were Canadian. I admitted I was a Yank, and they looked sympathetic (Keating was still PM there).
It's bad when you have to reflexively apologize on behalf of your leaders. It also explains why I insisted on speaking German as much as humanly possible in order to avoid being pegged as a tourist.

Kos has a story up about how the Gov. of Iowa asked McCain not to show up for a campaign stop, McCain ignored the Gov. and showed up anyhow.
When the Gov. asked Obama not to show up he politely stayed away.
