A hell of a lot of people in that 35% that never votes are so ignorant that it may be better if they remained nonvoters. Though I suppose one could also argue that even pedestrian ignorance is an improvement over the willful ignorance of BushCo 25 percenters.
And, rare bird, don't forget that a whole lot of those people were systematically disenfranchised.
How many people couldn't vote because the lines were too long and keeping a job requires being at work?

You're damn right that Election Day needs to be a work holiday, though. Also, we need election reform to prevent disenfranchisement and fraud.
It's beyond me how we'll get those things, short of a Second Great Depression--that being what it took last time to wake up enough people to beat down plutocracy at the ballot box. Even a 2GD doesn't guarantee political improvement--the original GD led to the New Deal here, but we know what it led to in Germany.

Election day needs to be a NATIONAL FUCKING HOLIDAY. With a FEDERAL STATUTE stating that ANY interference with voting will bring the FEDS. PERIOD.
I deal with veterans suffering the ravages of TBI in my two PTSD programs - it's heart wrenching work and it's only going to get worse, as more of these soldiers come home.
