Enjoy the book. Yah, it's a novelized version of the story, but a far better read than Frank G. Slaughter's "Immortal Magyar," which is an actual biography. Thompson's presentation is factual to the last detail. My father was a biologist and gave me the book when I was around 10 years old. I found it in a flea market 40 years later for 25˘, which decided me on the side-trip to Budapest (from Vienna. I love driving in Europe LOL).

The long reads are fine by me, but do whatever you need to do. You asked a question....what did bush promise Petraeus? I don't know what else he was promised but he already got a fourth star. Watching him in his January interview, he had three on his shoulder, today he had four. What's that worth to a lifer like Patraeus?
The current format is just fine - here at work, where I *sometimes* (ahem) read, is so damnably slow that not having to jump to another page is great.
And what a pile of concern troll nonsense this article is...yes, we want to back away from the truth in order to back the liar - yes, yes, you have finally gotten it - the crux of the liberal movement. Sigh. And you are so right - I have some version of this conversation with my mom all the time:
Mom: "I just don't understand how people can be so STUPID! How can you believe nonsense while staring proof in the face?"
Me: "There you go again, silly, silly Mother, applying logic and reasoned thought where is just doesn't belong. We've talked about this before..."
It is like they are living in some sort of parallel world where up is down and doing what viscerally *feels* good to them is more important than doing what *is* good. We can see them there, can hear them speak, but somehow cannot ever reach them. I work with some of these people, and have finally, wisely, given up. They remind me of ants, or termites, or some other colonial creature that functions with a central brain making decisions and the others blindly, mindlessly following.

The GOP screechers and whiners who are currently wetting their little shitty pants over the MoveOn.org ads have been largely silent when folks on their side of the pigsty use the same tactics on anyone who disagrees with the WH and Bush and all the other NeoCons. Let someone say that they don't like the shit-gruel the WH is peddling over the war, and suddenly those who disagree or criticise are called unpatriotic by the whingers and screechers currently infesting right-wing radio and blogs.
The right wing squadrons of hate have been using the "you're unpatriotic" schtick for way too long. They started it, and now they're having to face it being leveled at one of their own. I say, it's about fucking time they were hoisted on their own blood-stained petards.
I, for one, am tired of having MY patriotism questioned by slack-jawed right-wing droolers who haven't bothered to serve their country in any way. It is every citizen's patriotic duty to not only question what our government is doing, but to also call out the bullshit when we see it. This goes for anybody, including MoveOn. While I don't care for their ad, they're doing far less harm with it than the right-wing shit squads do whenever they wind up the Moaning Mighty Rightwing Wurlitzer in response to anyone who dares critizes their clueless newbie leader and the song-and-dance teams he continues to trot out in an effort to distract Americans with shiny rhetoric that has little relationship to the truth of what's happening in Iraq (or the rest of the Arab world, for that matter).
So, here's the question, kids: who's more patriotic? Those of us who pay attention to our current administration's death and carnage fetish and call it out for what it is? Or those rightie screechers who wheeze and whine and shit their pants whenever their emperor is shown to have no clothes?
My money's on the former, which, to the dismay of the right wingers on the Neocon fainting couch, includes liberals, left-wingers and other clear-thinking adults. It's about time we garnered more respect for acting more adult than the corrupt, wheezing, racist, anti-gay, anti-woman, pro-corporation, pro-shoving-religion-down-everybody's throats politicians, policy wonks, and media elites who currently call the Republican party home.
Steve was right. I will never call Petraeus anything but Betrayus ever again. He got his fourth star by becoming a Republican operative.

I love Northern Cal.
Once I get the last the two kids out of high school, I'll most likely move back down to the bay area to finish the edit on my (then finished shooting) documentary, which is being shot & edited in two phases, essentially the entire movie being made twice.
The ASC editor I want for the second edit -- the one which will be submitted to the Academy -- lives in the Bay Area.
But we're not talking Bay Area. We're talking Eureka which is a very different turtle. Eureka, I think -- Northern northern Cal, not Santa Rosa, Marin, or the Bay Area, beautiful places all but, um, too polite for what I have in mind. *grins* -- is a fine place to stick Al and his gang of mercenaries. You guys are used to lunatics what with your wars between hippies and loggers.
Get these guys nice and loopy and have them tell you what they reallythink of y'all. And of the Democratic party.
Assuming that doesn't get them dumped in a hole on genetic grounds -- improving the breed -- just keeping them stoned through Campaign 08 would be considered a public service to the rest of us and worth a free drink at YearlyKos or the Dem Convention next year. And like the Master whom Buffy needed to grind up his bones to keep him dead ("to make her bread"); these DNC bastards need to be kept MASSIVELY stoned just to keep them from trying to advice candidates "run to the center, run to the center."
