A little correction is in order. The TV station Helms worked for was a CBS affiliated station- not a CBS owned and operated station. A BIG difference as no network has editorial or content control of what an affiliate airs on it's local programming. So lighten up on the once-great CBS News.
Ed Murrow wasn't perfect, but he was as close as we will ever come to seeing a major media outlet that tried to deal with the news in an honest warts-and-all fashion. The Harvest of Shame, documenting the social injustice of the migrant farm worker, was aired on Thanksgiving in Prime Time. The guy had some stones and went to the mat more than once with Bill Paley, founder and Chairman of CBS, for honest reporting. Like many of the greats, he was gone too soon. He died of Lung Cancer.

If you read Andrew Sullivan - whether or not you ever agree with him - you know that he truly loves the US and dearly desires to become a citizen. But he is nervously waiting to see if he'll even get to stay here. The reason: Jesse Helms. Back in the panicky 80s Helms got enacted a ban on anyone with HIV entering the country, or any infected foreign nationals staying here. This puts us in fine company, with countries like Libya, Oman, and Saudi Arabia. Even China's come around and ended the ban.
So far Sullivan has remained here by getting waivers and deferments, which are hard to get and cost thousands in legal expenses, but if he ever runs out of them he'll be deported. The fact that he married his American husband means nothing.
PEPFAR, the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, is up for renewal this year, and it contains a provision to do away with the ban. I don't know of any active opposition, but if you want to send off ol' Jesse in style, drop an email to your congresscritters and tell them to make sure it doesn't disappear in committee.

The best memorial portrait of Helms is the Robbie Conal poster from the late '80s. Helms also screwed government funding for the arts (the NEA) once and for all. Nothing became his life so much as the leaving of it. Smoke a turd in hell, Jesse.

I think burning a cross on his gravesite would somehow be an appropriate send-off.
My only regret with his death is that he was allowed to die of old age rather than being torn limb-from-limb by angry mob 20 years ago.
I have nothing to add except that I hope Helms' family invests in a proper drainage/sewage system for Jesse's final resting place, because I anticipate lots of folks will be making a pit stop there.
