You are missing some of the context, I think.
I think that at least part of this is actually an expression of anger at the ANC, in particular Thabo Mbeki, who has done his level best over the past 15 years to keep Robert Mugabe in power, and so has contributed to the refugee flow.
Additionally, the ANC has been following the standard free trade economics, so those at the bottom have gotten fucked.
Juxtapose the two, and it gets ugly.
I hate to say this but I will - the amount of nativist fervor in this country is rising, and some group of complete nitwits will decide to take out their frustrations on a migrant labor camp.
