the old machine pols understood the contract of governance. if your house caught fire and the crew that put that fire out were sold the equipment by tweed's nephew, and led in the fight by one of his cousins, the fire got put out. if tweed's contacts were what staffed the lamplighters who really cared as long as every single night the lamps were lit?
the difference with these guys is that they just fucking steal and provide nothing but theft. they never had any plans to govern these motherfuckers only wanted to rule.
in Gangs of New York, Tweed says something like: "The appearance of the law must be upheld...especially while it's being broken!"

From what I recall, Boss Tweed is thought to have stolen about $100 Million from the budget. Once one takes inflation into accout, that still is less than the trillions Bu$h Co. has taken or wasted,
