Can't wait!

I guess we can look forward to more candidates like Jeannemarie Devolites Davis:

During the week of October 22, 2007, the Davis campaign sent out 60,000 campaign flyers accusing Petersen of not disclosing that his former law firm was working on issues that Petersen voted on while in the House of Delegates.[9] The flyer did not mention that Petersen had not been involved in the legal issues for the client. The flyer included a copy of a section of Petersen's Statement of Economic Interest, which he filed while serving in the House. It includes Petersen's home address, telephone number, and the names of his wife and four children. This information was not redacted by the Davis campaign.

Petersen held a press conference on October 26 in front of Davis' headquarters in Fairfax. He said that "words cannot describe the anger I feel" about the flyer, and called it "shocking" that Davis would use his personal information in such a manner. Petersen said that advertising his personal information was not in and of itself a problem, but using his personal phone number and children's identification was not appropriate or safe in an attack ad. Such tactics, Petersen said, endangered his family. Mrs. Petersen complained of receiving two telephone calls related to the attack ad, and police presence appeared at the home, before the family vacated the house. In response, Davis said in her own press conference that because the information was public and included to supporters, it was appropriate for an attack ad. [10] [11] [12] [9] [13] [10] [11]

Because of the controversy, the Virginia Coalition of Police and Deputy Sheriffs withdrew its initial endorsement of Davis.[11]

Devolites Davis also claimed that Petersen's campaign uploaded a video to YouTube which brought up her daughter's armed robbery conviction of several years ago. However, according to Washington CBS affiliate WUSA, there is no evidence anyone from the Petersen camp uploaded the video. [13]

Awesome!

Gravatar Oregon's GOP did this a few years back: the wingnut fundies took over the party, and it's been disaster ever since. The only bright spot left is Gordon Smith in the US Senate, and he only survives through guile and incumbency. Yet Oregon used to have a raft of middle-of-the-road, moderate Republicans in elected office. No more.

When the GOP gives up trying to attract independents and Goldwater (i.e., non-panty-sniffing) conservatives, the result is the Jesus Party (28%).

And it couldn't happen to a nicer set of wingnut freaks.

Gravatar Think they'll bring George Allen back?

Gravatar I think Allen is going to run for gov.

Gravatar If the people of Virginia would want Allen for governor, that's fine with me. With a governor, the people of the state get exactly the idiot they deserve. With a US senator or congressman, we all get stuck with their idiot. Better Virginia keeps him.

Gravatar I say, the more wingnut they get, the better.

They got in by pretending:

Pretending to be compassionate.

Lying about what they were going to do.

Convincing a minimum of the public they stood for things they wanted to destroy.

Masks off!

Gravatar um, anyone here live in Virginia? Or, like, have any clue what they're talking about?

We elected a Democratic governor (Tim Kaine) in 2005 and a Democratic senator (Jim Webb) in 2006. George Allen, like, LOST. So did Jeanne Marie "Mrs Tom Davis" Devolites in the state Senate election of 2007.

The hard right turn of the state party which you describe fucked over Tom Davis, who had hoped to run for John Warner's Senate seat, and being a so-called moderate, would have actually had a chance here in Northern VA. The nomination of wingnut former governatorial disaster Gilmore is going to result in a stomp by popular former governor Mark Warner, and we will then have two Democratic senators.

Tom Davis, who is my Congressman, is resigning in bitter disgust from politics. We have a well known local Democrat running against an obscure rethug millionaire for his seat, and that ain't gonna be much of a contest either.

We're going to be a swing state for the first time in decades and our votes are going to count in the Presidential election.

Get your facts straight before you dismiss our entire state as lost to some fundie redneck Satan, please.

Gravatar and by the way:

its=possessive
it's=contraction for "it is".

Amazing how many bloggers missed that day of third grade.

Gravatar I think the VA GOP is trying to ensure a Democratic majority for the next thousand years, if this is the best they can do.

Gravatar It's good to see the civil war between Jesus-and-gun-lovin' ignoramuses and the the neoconservative PNACers and oil-stained greedheads getting into gear. It was only a matter of time after the "moderates" were drummed out of the party before the rabid dogs turned on each other.

Even better news, a significant proportion of voters from both groups will stay home rather than vote for McCain. Every little bit counts in Obama making his margin.

Gravatar Actually, I consider Jo Ann Abbott's straightforwardness to be a breath of fresh air:

“I'm sick and tired of the bipartisan BS that means we're giving up our ideas.”

She's speaking from the right of the political spectrum, but a lot of us on the left would express the same sentiment. The "FISA Farce" is the latest example of the Democratic congress's seeming inability to accomplish anything of substance, instead groveling at the feet of a wildly unpopular President and the unpopular Republican party.

Gravatar e - I think they're talking about the GOP fools. Okay, and Jim Webb just echoed bush and mcbush's call for offshore drilling/exploration :-0 I'm not too happy with that little turn of events. Also he was a republican so I'm wondering if he's some sort of trojan horse or somehting.

I know VA went for Obama so I DO hope you get to swing that way in the general

Oh, and thanks for the its/it's note. I've posted that on my sticky to remind me. I USED to know that ...

Gravatar e,

I'm a Virginian now and used to live in Louisiana so I know a thing or two about dealing with bad perceptions. Generally the company here are praising this rightward turn by the VA GOP because they know that it runs counter to the trends seen in the state recently. One can only hope that the VA GOP aspires to the same level of power enjoyed by state republicans in other Eastern Seaboard states like MA, NY, NJ, CT, etc.

But I'm definitely feeling you on the perception front. I mean, just look at what the LA GOP hath wrought...Jindal! A man who admitted to doing freelance exorcisms and suggested that it cured someone of cancer! *head in hands*

Gravatar e, my bad perceptions are NOT of VA. but strictly of the VA. GOP.

I like webb, warner and others who have done great things in Va.

Just commenting on the GOP wingnuts running the other party in your state.

Gravatar OT, but did you see the new 'Presidential' seal Baracky introduced?

Quite the item, eh?

Gravatar serr8d, sending that jpg is as close as you are going to get to getting any-- so enjoy.

Gravatar I live in Virginia, and the Virginia Republican party has been in a period of near civil war for some years, as the hard-right tries to eliminate any internal opposition. The reasonable republicans I know have mostly been targeted and removed from office - at least one campaigned against the Republican nominee in the General.

Gravatar I'd never thought I'd see the day when to "reject the 'topdown Richmond-knows-best approach' that has become unsuccessful" sounds like treating Richmond as a group of "outside agitators."

I suspect that means a lot of folks out in the boonies are going to pull more than a few stunts, thinking it won't be noticed.

Sounds like we need to start a "Flip Video Fund" to spread a few dozen throughout Virginia and more than a few other places.

My two bits...

Gravatar I honestly can't comprehend how ANYONE -- even a hard line wingnutter -- could be stupid enough to think this is a winning strategy.

As I mentioned above, if they'd had the sense God gave a goat they would have nominated Tom Davis to run against Mark Warner for the seat John Warner is vacating. That would have produced a REALLY competitive contest, cuz Davis has successfully passed himself off as a moderate for well over a decade and retained considerable popularity in his -- MY -- No Va district and beyond. There is no reason I can think of that he wouldn't have gotten the vote of every registered rethuglican in the state, nor why even the craziest of the crazy ass fundies couldn't have been persuaded to vote for him. As is true of most of his ilk, his so-called "moderateness" is a steaming pile of bullshit, you see.

Gravatar wionderful news..thsi puts verginia into play for the forseeable future..hopefuly wingnuts take over more the the republican party.

Gravatar Virginia is where the virtual victory party starts in November.
