The bomber on the left is the B-25 Mitchell.

Good catch on the dustoff. The Huey with the weapons was the best shot we found. The international red cross against the white background was added in post-production, along with the Battalion designator, "326", making this the 326th Med Bn, 101st Airborne Div, also known as Eagle Dustoff.
Normally a Huey dustoff would have a hoist coming out on the left side as we face it, as well as the handles of three sets of stretchers. As with all medical units, weapons are authorized for self-defense. We decided this dustoff was construing the rule liberally. Heh.

Joseph Heller's service as a B-25 bombardier was the source of Catch-22.
I always figured Steve picked the B-24 for his site because it was built in greater numbers, dropped more tonnage and flew more missions than the B-17. Substance over spin.
The B-25 was like that. They built a ton of them and they served in all kinds of crazy roles. The Doolittle Raid, field mods with 12+ .50 cal machine guns, skipping bombs off the water at a low level, torpedoes, rockets and even a 75mm gun.
Not a "sexy" aircraft by any means but it got the job done.

That's why we picked the B-25.
When we were looking at what aircraft we wanted on the banner to carry on Gilly's tradition of aircraft up top, we picked the B-25 for all the reasons you mentioned -- and because it was a WWII aircraft to honor Steve.
The AC-130U because we wanted something that got down with the grunts, given Hubris Sonic is a former SF NCO and knows about needing fire power.
And a dustoff, because I'm a former flight medic who flew in Hueys.

Good work on the question. I have no idea how many damn hours I spent on the thing. At least 15-20. Working out birth dates, dates of Gilly's first posts, weeks from his birth, translating all of them into Julian, and so on and so on and so on.

The AC in your banner isnt a "Uboat" its an AC-130H spectre...its tail # is 69-6569.....I was stationed at Hurlburt fld for 3 yrs and worked on this acft(numerous times) and eventually deployed with it.
oh yeah the two 20mm guns have been removed since the mid 90s due to increased SAM threats
