Finally got around to reading it today. (I had to find and read "A Rose for Emily" first to avoid the spoiler.) As always Drifty stomps Brooks and ill begotten fellow travelers to a bloddy pulp. Indeed to see Drifty, Krugman, and Herbert wail on him with a posthumous assist from Steve is a wonder to behold. Although likening Brooks to Darkseid is far too kind. Really, he'd much more one of those fourth rank comic relief super-villains like "Newsgroup" from Kevin Smith's "Bluntman and Chronic".

I had seen Drifty's 4-parter earlier. Glad you caught it and have recommended it. For sheer wordsmithery, I love reading Driftglass. It's a bonus that I also happen to wholeheartedly agree with what he has to say, but even just for an appreciation of the love for the written word, Drifty's got it. He's one of those rare people who even if you didn't care what he was writing, you'd read it just to see how he said it.
I used to keep a mental list of people who I would want to have at a dinner party. And it didn't matter what they talked about, as long as you could wander the room and just listen to their voices. Wally Cox and Hermione Gingold were two of them, I remember. Also Geoffrey Holder and James Earl Jones. And Eartha Kitt.
There's a much smaller list of people whose written voices I would want to hear no matter what they were saying. But Drifty is certainly one of them.

Goddamn. I'd never noticed David Brooks' astonishing resemblance to a sugar glider before.

Drifty is great -- his was the first blog I ever came across and I compulsively check for new posts two or three times a day. And, he is who sent me to Gilly's place and from there to here. Thank you Driftglass.

LM hit it right on the head: Drifty is, and has been, a stone favorite.
Such a strange twist, missing Steve, and rejoicing in the family that big brain built!

I'm singin' baby, opera, for driftglass.
That was some righteous blood-chilling clarity from God.
The Rose for Emily frame was absolutely f**ing brill.

There's nothing like the scent of scorched pissant pundit, done to a turn by a master wordsmith. If words could literally cut, Brooks would be leaving this world in a casserole dish.
I've been saying it for a long time now: There's something about Bobo that consistently brings out the best in Driftglass, a sort of anti-Beatrice to his Dante.

Just spent about several hours, obsessively following every link in Driftglass' linked posts, including reading the entire story in the final post (so as not to spoil the surprise.)
Simply wonderful.
Lower Manhattanite is dead on balls accurate.
Go read.
And as to the larger point, yeah, that too.
All of us are blessed by the big man.
I don't actually believe in a heaven. But were there heavens, I could get Gilly at a barbecue, and the rest of us his guests, with Gilly as one of the Gods who came down to earth for a little while to push the rest of us along a while, to inspire us to find that something we'd spent our lives trying to find.
That... good friends, and some really great 'cue.

Yes, it was Steve wasn't it?
Since the flap over Bad-Faith Brooks's (the man reeks of it) latest mendacity, I've been trying to recall who it was that first brought Reagan's Neshoba County pilgrimage back into its deserved spotlight, because I knew I'd seen mention of it somewhere else in recent months. It was Steve Gilliard.
This alone is definitely worth a pause and thank you, and a recollection that it's important to correctly prioritize the history you know.

Truly good. If Bobo reads that piece, it won't be long before we hear him singing "Daisy" before blacking out.
