Spectacular, Hubris!
Great photo essay unto itself, and hey!, I learned something. The whole “fish broiler but no oven” thing is really a revelation!
It's a companion piece to the comment Terri made a couple of months back about how different things are in Japan—in her case, in terms of finding clothes cut to teh American physique, as opposed to the differently statured Japanese sizing.
Well shot, well written, and thought-provoking.
Good one,
LM

Very fun stuff. Hubris, where does this happen? Is it a club, restaurant, what?
Love the photos. Looks yummy.
Hell, LM, I can't find clothing in my size anywhere in Canada. Ever since Terri described her dilemma, I've thought of her every time it occurs to me to complain about this.
I mean: If I get well and truly desperate, I can hop in the car, drive three hours, and be in an American mall that does have things in my size. (And two or three times a year, I do just this. Got a trip planned the minute this semester's over, in fact.)
But Terri's either stuck with mail order (not a horrible option, if you're dealing with a company that has reliable sizing -- but returns are a bitch), finding a dressmaker, or doing without.
Just keeps it all in perspective, it does. Girlfriend: I feel at least some of your pain, but do not know how you manage.

LOVED the photos and the vision of how folks maintain culture in another country. Ernest Hemingway once said the key to good writing was to find the most interesting thing about a situation and write that, don't worry about other description, and I was reminded of that in this account -- it was all just plain INTERESTING. And I got it because of that. Thx.

Looking at these pictures made me hungry -- and a little blue.
But then I got an e-mail, just now, from two of the local Democrats Abroad guys. They've rented a church hall overtown, and are having a potluck expats' Thanksgiving feast at 4:00 on Sunday!
I RSVPed instantly, of course. We're on for mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, and a bottle or two of wine.
We are SO there.....

I can barely type this out over my swollen belly ... a 29-pounder, 15 for dinner, a magnum and I don't know how many bottles of Jura wine ... I dimly remember seeing five pies, a large creme caramel, and a plate of Rice Krispy treats, I guess for good measure, on a sideboard about 90 minutes ago. Good job over there, and Happy Thanksgiving from New England.

wow! HS, this is a lovely piece, as are our other GNB family-focused posts...those pictures! chefs with good anger management skills! pie!
And, Mrs. R, in defiance of the lack of scrumptious clothing for my well-rounded body type in this country, I am about to skedaddle over to my second T-giving dinner this week, at this very same place...
LM, my friend, when y'all can get to Tokyo, there are futons with your names on them (and if you think that was easy to arrange, well... )
And in another wonderful note: it's the Neerling-Papa! so great to see you here.
much love to all...gotta go, I hear the sound of hot rum being buttered...

OMG. Amazing. I hope you all are enjoying a post-holiday rest.
And: yum!
I ended up in Bangkok one Thanksgiving many years ago. My friend and I did one of those hotel expat dinners, and I tell you, it was feeble and sad. Nothing like the feast you put on!
