I get this, too, from supposedly intelligent lawyers at work. When you mention that it would probably put the troops in the field at risk, they get kind of a glassy stare. Don't want to mention Third World War because I suspect they're up for it.

What this calls for is another stupid, futile gesture!
Urge your Senators to oppose the Lieberman-Kyl Amendment on Iran. Now!
The Senate will likely vote on this Tuesday, 9/25.

I was wondering when someone would get to discussing the chances of an upcoming major league economic dislocation in China.
The big questions are, of course, are first, we talkin' 1837/1857/1893 or 1929, and second, how much does the Chinese government rely on ethnic Han nationalism to mitigate potential anger at the government when things begin to fall apart there?
I'll be looking forward to your take on this...

For some reason, when I read "all over big Dick's lies like a condom on my daughter's boyfriend" I just knew I was reading something by Jesse Wendel.

One would hope that trying to incite a war through a false flag attack or by proxy would be the sure way to get angry mobs out in the streets, lusting after Dick Cheney's chitlins. However, the vast majority of Americans are sheep and unwilling to speak out. No one likes being tastered or gassed.

And yes, the "Times Online" article is a bit dated, but not so much that it isn't useful information.

"how much does the Chinese government rely on ethnic Han nationalism to mitigate potential anger at the government when things begin to fall apart there?"
A lot. The Chinese government uses the nationalist card gratuitously to ward off domestic discontent, and it's pretty easy to play given the historical suspicion of foreign powers stemming from the bad experiences China has suffered at the hands of 19th and 20th century imperial powers.

First it was nukes. You knew they were lying, but they kept talking and talking -- nukes, nukes, nukes. Hmmm... where have I heard that bullshit before and from whom?
LOL! Bolton? This whole thing reminded me of when Wolfowitz said they settled on the WMD lie.
Pitiful.

I keep hearing about how sheep-like the American people are. And it's sort of true.
However, the vast majority of Americans are sheep and unwilling to speak out. No one likes being tastered or gassed.
But I don't know. We're also, as a people, pretty damned mean and selfish. You bomb Iran, and it's $10/gallon gasoline on days when the supply trucks show up. Massive economic dislocation has a way of focusing the mind.
Who, by the way, is going to be doing the tasering/gassing? The cops, who are just as pissed off as Joe Unemployed Sixpack? And let's not forget one of the more charming effects of the Second Amendment: we're all armed to the teeth.
If these idiots in the House of Cheney think the American people are going to remain sheep forever, they are in for a rude awakening.

Stickler, quite true. One only has to look at how some of us reacted after 9/11 to see the ugly underside of human nature, American style.
Of course, Cheney can count on the Corporate Media to keep us distracted with the Next Shiny New Thing until we're faced with a fait very accompli.

Well, Wanderer, this may be so:
Of course, Cheney can count on the Corporate Media to keep us distracted with the Next Shiny New Thing until we're faced with a fait very accompli.
It's what happens after that fait accompli that matters. When Bush becomes a liability for Big Money, coverage might change. (I almost typed "coverage might get better," but then I broke out laughing.) The dollar is down, the market is going sideways, and housing ... less said the better.

Dick Cheney wants to bomb Iran? Has he got his pilot's license yet?
Seriously, the day the US bombs Iran, it'll be "Welcome to the Chinese/Indian/EU/Oceania Century....... don't mind that dysfunctional, clapped out 'thing' once known as the United States writhing in the corner". Have a good day!

Yeah, soon it will be four far less dangerous, much more easily contained countries anyway.

As I keep saying to those who want to pick a fight with Iran: "ever heard about the Straits of Hormuz? The one that a high percentage of Mid-East oil gets shipped through? The one that Iran could very easily close the shipping lanes to?"
Plus, I think the Chinese would have a wee bit to say if we were to attack Iran...
Heck, they don't have to do anything--just refuse to buy our gov't bonds the next time we put them on the market.
