Dear Senator XXX,

I am writing to you to urge you to vote to strip the telecom companies, and any and all related individuals and government officials of any immunity from criminal and civil charges related to unlawful interception of American citizen's wire communications. While I understand that certain steps need to be taken to ensure the safety of Americans, breaking the law to do this - and protecting those that willfully break the law - does NOT protect the American public.

Our most precious asset in protecting us is the rule of law. Protecting those who willfully break laws they are sworn to uphold goes against everything the founding fathers fought and risked their lives for.

Please vote to strike any amendments that provide immunity.

Gravatar Before the Super Bowl yesterday there was a recitation of the first part of the Declaration of Independence by various NFL personalities. Though it was to the powers that be at FOX probably just inane patriotic boilerplate, it reminded me of what matters in this debate.

The colonial elite that decided to break away from the king in Britain did so appealing to the notion that governments do not exist to secure their citizens or subjects against any possible physical danger, but rather governments exist ONLY to secure the rights and freedoms of the people against other people looking to take them away. It is pretty damn clear:

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.

That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness."

We can't look to politicians to solve this problem anymore. The security state is antithetical to the very foundation of this country, and the dissolving of these rights by congressional-executive fiat should be responded to with the utmost urgency.

They don't get to take away our freedoms and liberties. It is not their right. That the Democrats are the enablers of this tells me that the time of crisis is now. There is not even any longer effective pro-Constitutional opposition.

Gravatar Seitan striping the amunity is just the poins pill to get this vetoed..the whole bill needs to sunset and never coem back.


Gravatar I've contacted both my Senators on this. Since they are on different sides of the aisle, it sort of works out as a wash in the vote department. The important thing is to contact them and let them know people are both paying attention and concerned about FISA.

This is an important issue as in our modern times, technology is making surveillance easier and easier to accomplish. I really think that anything we can do to protect privacy rights is important.


Gravatar I agree with you, Moon - but I'm a good little soldier and have called many times previously about this bad bill, asking her to oppose it in its entirety. Stripping out the bad parts may be the best we can hope for - for now.
