Media Matters says they counted 90 questions on the matter over seven years -- and then gave up counting.

The Media Matters article actually says something much worse than this: 90 questions over seven programs, not over seven years.

Otherwise, a great article.

Gravatar Oops. Thanks. Fixed.

Gravatar Well done Sara.

Gravatar The endurance of people like Chris Matthews in the corporate media is the crowning reason why I treat everything they say as if it were an editorial in "Pravda" through 1992. Or in the Völkischer Beobachter any time from 1923 to 1945.

I subscribe to neither of Seattle's two newspapers. I couldn't stomach the Seattle Times 10 years even ago, when I had the political awareness of a tree stump. I haven't bothered to follow television "news" since the mid 1980s. And back in those days, I was still a Republican. Which tells you that the stench of corruption from the corporate media was strong to wake the dead two decades ago.

These days? If the creatures who pass themselves off as "newsmen" these days tell me that the sun rises in the east, I'll check that assertion myself before believing it.

Gravatar I subscribe to my local paper, because it's local - I need to know what my county commissioners are up to, along with those chattering monkeys up in Tallahassee.

National news? I hate to admit this, but I get more actual news from the BBC, N-TV, and the Sydney Morning Herald.

Gravatar brilliant. and sweet jesus, I hate chris matthews

Gravatar Well said. Putting it in this context novel and apt. I turn puppet-mouth off as soon as he appears, so I don't get the pungent content anymore. I don't miss it, either.

Gravatar The phrase "Philadelphia Irish" is just another synonym for "dumbfuck since birth."

Gravatar I haven't been able to stomach Matthews' vicious bile for years. The man is a sleazy hack with some disgusting psychological hangups which he puts on display nightly.

The stuff that spews out of his mouth is nauseating, even when he thinks he's being complimentary to the objects of his obsession. (Which isn't often, when it comes to Democrats.) He has posed the "castrating bitch" question about Clinton and to a lesser extent, Pelosi, on a more or less daily basis for years. Matthews obviously has some extreme animus towards all women, and no compunction about venting it. The women he has on his pathetic panel discussions have to tolerate his sexist nonsense as well, but since few of them ever complain or speak up against his venomous attacks, they're complicit in his behavior.

Gravatar I agree with Xeno (howdy, 'stranger') that the women who appear on Crass Matthews' show should pay him back on air. Why can't Katrina Vanden Heuvel pop up one day and say, "You know Chris, that's the dumbest thing I've heard since the last time I was on your show. How about you shut the fuck up?"

Then she can empty her coffee cup, or vodka, or whatever they're drinking up there over No Lips' head. And don't walk off, sit back down and dare him to respond.

Gravatar Thanks, I've also been linking to Media Matters coverage of this over the years.

And thank you for not suggesting that we fight back against this by voting for Hillary. If, as you said, the comments had been about African Americans, how would we be getting even by casting a vote for Barack Obama?

The only thing worse than Matthews inexcusable misogyny is exploiting that misogyny for partisan gain.

Gravatar We can complain all we want in blogs.
The real power that we hold is to DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS.
Write MSNBC every time he says something like this.Show this article to eveyone and ask them to email call or write MSNBC.
Don Imus was fired because of the back lash that would not go away and even the staff at the net work would not support him.
This is power in numbers and letting the sponsors know that you will not be supporting their products because of their support of this show goes a long way if there are enough numbers!
Make it short simple and to the point but get it written to MSNBC!!

Gravatar Progressive women appear rarely on the show. And if they call him on it, they don't.

It's his Hardball, and if people don't play, he takes it away.

So only public outcries will push Tweety off his perch.

Gravatar Mark, I'm not a Hillary fan. Furthermore: I've heard Matthews' explanation of his logic in saying that, and it actually made some sense to me. So I'm not inclined to get all huffy about just that one event.

However: The Media Matters article lays it out very clearly: This is who Matthews is. It's a persistent, pervasive pattern of behavior with him. And that's far more dismaying to me. Anybody can say one stupid thing, but Matthews has said this shit for a decade now without a single complaint from anyone.

So now it's time to complain. And you're right: the timing is important. It's one thing for a mindless bigot to slam women guests as a matter of course; it's another when he's using overtly sexist tactics to humiliate them in public during an election year.

That's out of bounds for a journalist. A real pro knows a hundred ways to take down a fool without resorting to racism or sexism. If Matthews hasn't mastered these in 40 years as a reporter, he doesn't belong on the air.

Gravatar Thanks for this.

I wrote MSNBC & told them to take that cerebrally constipated bastard off the air, very politely of course. Usually the thought of telling others to imitate me inspires nausea ... but this time I'll just suck back a Gravol & say it:

DO WHAT I DID.
YOU'LL ENJOY IT WAY MORE THAN WHINING.

Gravatar Thanks Sara - great post. I blogged about this today, quoted you a lot. Thanks again.

Gravatar I wish just for once one of the targets of his misogynistic crap would haul off and deck him, or even just call him on it hard and clear.

One of the "girls" needs to shove that shit right back down his throat.

Gravatar This is one of the best articles I've seen that exposes Chris Matthews for the idiot he is:
