The only consolation I can take here is that even with the Corporate Holodeck Media in their corner, even with their full arsenal of propaganda and dirty tricks, the Radical Right ONLY "won" the last two Prez elections by the skins of their teeth.
The RR is alienating more and more people. They can't help it. Simian social dominance displays are their DRUG. Like other addicts, they build up a tolerance and need higher doses to get off the same way. In this case, a stronger "drug" means more and more naked dominance and cruelty, and the more blatant they get, the closer they come to awakening the sleeping giant of all those citizens who don't vote habitually.
Dare I hope I hear the slenderness-challenged soprano warming up for the RR?

Ran into one of these assholes in a bar a few weeks back, told me to go home or some shit...made a deal with him, if my family imagrated more recently then his I would go back...if his immigrated more recently he would go back.....I don't think he has left for whatever old country his grandmother came from yet the dirty imigrant welshed on the bet. (my family served under washington in the french and indian war.)
excellent assesment of the situation here doc. i can report from ground zero that this is exactly what they are doing. the scarey part is that they had to spend a lot of time searching the lawbooks for this little catch-22, then they have to spend lots of man hours digging through the phone books and hitting the pavement to make it work. it all boils down to they are fucking nuts.
now that the heat is below 115° most of the time now, the border vigilante groups are back in operation. with even viler adgendas. i have no direct proof, i've never caught them at it with my own eyes, but everytime these assholes are down on the border the water stations that are kept stocked along the desert trails begin to be vandalized. they come down here, that's what happens. draw your own conclusions.
these people are crazed enough to deny thirsty people a drink of water in the desert. these people are unhinged enough to spend all this time and effort to pervert the very system of laws they claim to defend.
there ain't no negotiating with crazy.
God, I hope there's a hell if only because these guys deserve it hundredfold.
Not to mention, I hope the brilliant idea doesn't spread. I don't know yet if I'll want to get citizenship in the future or not (still working for my green card) but having the most Spanish-sounding last names around (figures, I'm from Spain) means I'd be a perfect victim for this scam.
Then again, if I apply it will be mostly to take advantage of the Homeland Security gravy train up here in NOVA :P
Last but not least, there's some county I'm not going to live in, ever.
I'm contacting some local orgs this afternoon to see if they can't get some sort of PSA targeted towards the Hispanic community in my area. Something to the effect of "If you are here illegally OR if you are here legally but not yet a citizen, you cannot register to vote. Do not believe those who tell you to do so."
Also, I know a couple of lawyers in town. Let's see what they can do.

The way to get the word out is through Univision and other Spanish-language outlets, as well as the Catholic churches.
I'm sending these links to the babe (and I use that term advisedly) at Univision who gave me her card a few years back when she was looking for more back story on the same-sex marriage boom in the region.
The way this needs to be stopped is for one of these ratfuckers who's going door to door in an immigrant neighborhood to get beat down and run out of town. These people are so lacking in ethics that the only way to stop them is for them to run to their SUVs fleeing for their lives. Nothing less.
The rat-fuckers [make that rat-rapists, since no self-respecting rat would voluntarily mate with these arseholes] fear the same thing for which I hope.
The USA will acquire a brown majority sooner or later in this century. Since the Radical Right depends irremediably on white supremacism to keep its Pretty Hate Machine going [h/t Driftglass], and the RR has taken over the GOP, a brown majority will DOOM the RR and the GOP.

They pay people for registrations with little/no supervision of quality control.
