LM,
Does this mean we get a shot of you in a velvet smoking jacket and a white-on-white jacquard ascot, smoking a calabash pipe?
*voiceover*
This has been another installation of NewsBlog Masterpiece Theater...

Jen, you're going to laugh your ass off when you see one of the pics I'm using in the second installment of my fashion post.
I'm not in the item. But the fact I have the item'll crack you up.

You can either thank Rex Harrison and Audrey Hepburn for that, or quietly curse them, but like it or not, they (along with the Julie Andrews Broadway portrayal of Eliza) sit as the gold standard.
What about Leslie Howard and Wendy Hiller in the film version of Pygmalion? Their performances were so sparkling that even Shaw himself did not mind the change of ending (My Fair Lady REALLY pissed him off).

It cannot help that Shaw wrote such detailed stage directions for his plays. I know, I know, it was because he could not get a novel published to save his life and so used plays as his outlet, but still. Actors are stuck doing exactly what he wrote decades ago, standing in the same places, fiddling with the same props. How in the world can they not look stiff and mechanical?

What about Stewie's immortal efforts in Family Guy? "The Life of the Wife is Ended by the Knife..."

It's hard to believe that's Claire Danes in the picture. Her "Audrey Hepburn moment," when she cleans up and dresses up for the first time, must be dazzling.

LM,,
It's a fiendishly difficult play (all of Shaw's work is) but I've never been impressed by Daines. And this is no territory for lightweights.
Waiting on that velvet smoking jacket...

Thanks for taking me out of my usual political-blog-reading rut. The only other way I'd've read a theater review would be if it were from James Wolcott (and I've just about stopped reading his stuff since his blog was absorbed into the VF site...or maybe it is because Steve isn't around to send me over there anymore.)
Keep on mixin' it up!

And there's gotta be a fez to go with that velvet smoking jacket!

Brilliant evocation of what happens to a performer when he steps out onto that stage, LM, just brilliant.

Bravo and more of these excellent reviews if you can, LM. The channeling was an interesting break from your usual voice. So sorry the acting was a disappointment.

We intend to continue to give you some reviews of the Theater as well as Cinema. And we shall see what else.
Especially once the election is over now less than a year away.
