How could you omit the Delphonics "Didn't I Blow your Mind this Time"
Love that song and it definitely should be on the list.

You got "Let's Stay Together" on there twice...otherwise, fine list.
Al Green's "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" clobbers the Gibbs' version - no contest. Same with his "For the Good Times" and Ray Price.
I'd toss in the Tempts' "Memories," an underappreciated cut from their "A Song for You" album (and also in the stellar "Emperors of Soul" box). Most people recognize the Manhattans' awful version, a medley with "The Way We Were".
One more: Percy Sledge, "When a Man Loves a Woman." 2:52 of majestic simplicity. I go postal every time I think of that jagoff Bolton winning a Grammy for his dreadful cover; fortunately, even the "Lite FM" stations are more likely to play Sledge's original.
Finally, I urge y'all to check out a series of CDs, "Dave Godin's Deep Soul Classics" (UK imports). Four discs worth of mostly obscure, tortured beggin', screamin', and shoutin' - all ballads. Must be heard to be believed!

Ah, drbopper, thank you for this! being a bit more of an AA punk poet lover myself (Patti Smith Group stylee), I got such joy out of Steve's contrariness on R&B.
Not that there aren't lot of masterpieces in this list - there are.
and I like to think that he's somewhere reading it and smiling, even now...

That should be "Deep Soul TREASURES," folks. Sorry. And while we're talking about imports, check out the awesome catalog of Soul Jazz Records:
