Coincidentally, 1999 was when he started running for the GOP nomination and presumably needed to shore up support with the Christian Right he didn't give a damn about before. Two things, I would say, can be blamed for the narrowness of Obama's lead. 1) Obama's FISA sell-out (and let us not forget that besides the retroactive telecom immunity, that "spy bill" itself essentially establishes the infrastructure of a nascent police-state) and 2), probably more importantly, the overall mood of total cynicism about established institutions in this country. As I said in that other thread I mentioned, I almost wasn't going to bother to vote, but the insanity in the Caucasus combined with some timely viewing of clips from Threads and The Day After on YouTube turned me around.

When Joe Redstater marks the ballot for the ReThugs, he knows he's going to get what he wants and agrees with. When Jack Bluestater marks his ballot for the Dems, he knows in his heart he's not going to get anything remotely close to what he wants and agrees with, but he does it anyway due to peer-pressure and wanting to think he can mitigate his country's self-inflicted death-spiral in some way.
