The man has never been in charge of anything that didn't turn to shit. It's his whole history, and was his pattern well before he was (s)elected. Except now he's in charge of bigger things, and having them turn to shit is has a lot more consequences for a lot more people. Every time I'm sitting at a light behind some dolt with a "W" or "Bush/Cheney" sticker still on it, I feel like going up to the driver's window, mentioning that I saw their sticker, and then asking "So how's that working out for you?"

I know a few people who think the high oil prices are just from speculation encouraged by the media. They also still think the WMDs are stashed in Syria.
And why the hatin' on Maleficent? She looks like she has fun at least. Matalin looks more like Mok, from "Rock and Rule," after he finds out there were some empty seats at his last concert.
My name is Mok. Thanks a lot.

there simply comes a point where people say things like "numbers shumbers" and start to panic.
without an understanding of the mechanics involved with basic economics mr. (math iz hard) bush will probably keep doing things that will have the opposite of the intended effect. he will keep bailing out the ultra rich, or the "too big to fail" houses, and keep injecting cheap cash into the pipeline, until the time they realize that the cash is worthless, as is the financial instution that is propped up by the infusions of it.

Everything looks "robust" when you ignore reality for your own delusions. And this administration has certainly been one of the most effective at projecting their own delusions in the general public.
Also, it's hard to see a recession when you're in the class of people who have been actively stealing the wealth of the middle and lower classes for decades. Another specialty of the current ruling klepto-corporatocracy.

Bernanke strikes me as being like Conrad's Lord Jim: he's spent his whole life imagining that if he had run the Fed in 1929, he could have avoided the Great Depression and more importantly, prevented the New Deal from being born. However, when the moment for real-life action came, he's been found wanting. Oh the pathos.

Yes. This is a big part of the hard times working people are facing right now, namely the inflation resulting from the Fed's desperate attempts to prop up the flagging financial sector.
But believe me, what we're experiencing now is just the prologue. Take a look at this and tell me it doesn't make you want to shit your pants.

Well, myself and a buddy are using our stimulus refund on guns. That's one thing this administration understands and keeps available (for now).
Oh, and that gas price? It's just gonna keep goin' up and up and up. Shit, I stopped driving over a year ago, when gas was around two and a quarter (that priced me right out onto my bicycle).

The Corporate Holodeck Media will now face its greatest challenge ever: somehow convincing the USAmerican electorate that this oncoming catastrophe is somehow the fault of "liberals" and/or Democrats, and concurrently convincing them that McSame, despite being clearly identified as an Elephascist, is somehow a "maverick" who will do things differently from the Chimperor and make everything hunky-dory again.
Alas, I fear the CHM may be able to do that. The CHM is such an awesome brainwashing machine that if Goebbels had possessed it, the Nazis might have taken over the world without firing a shot.
I hope that I am underestimating my fellow citizens, but 28 years of bitter experience, going all the way back to the election of Ronald Fucking Dipshit Scrooge May Cthulhu Piss On His Grave Reagan, tell me that they will fall for it at least one more time.

And in the meantime, what exactly are the Democratic "leaders" doing to make sure the blame for the impending Depression falls squarely were it belongs, on the shoulders of Bush and the Rethugs? Not much that I can see.

cap d,
i feel like doing a lot more than asking those goddamned fools a question. 54 million of those fools voted for w........... twice. americans are strong and resourceful, we will survive w. but how can a country with 54 million weak links do anything but fuck up everything? how do you feel when one of the 54 million fools says: "i voted for w twice, but i wouldn't do it again."?

Goebbels would have really gone to town had the enormous brainwashing power of television been at his disposal, no doubt about it. I've heard it said that his tactics and techniques are casually employed all the time these days.

NPR's weekly show "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me" (which is awesome) observed that the Mortgage Bankers Association, the main Washington lobbying group for, well, mortgage bankers, is having a little bit of trouble.
Doing what, you ask?
Since they're losing tenants in the Washington office building they own, they are having trouble ...... paying their mortgage.
Over to LM!!!: “Ba-doomp-boomp. Psssssh.”

‘what exactly are the Democratic "leaders" doing to make sure the blame for the impending Depression falls squarely were it belongs, on the shoulders of Bush and the Rethugs?’
Precisely. The Dems have spent three decades genuflecting before Volker, Greenspan and Bernanke, who are all working from the monetarist cookbook. The Dems won’t change the flavor if they don’t change the recipe.
OT: Speaking of Lord Jim, CNN’s palpably freaked-out Baghdad correspondent Michael Ware reminds me of the Dennis Hopper character in Coppola’s Apocalypse Now, which was loosely based on Conrad’s Heart of Darkness. Ware’s been up the river too long and seen too much.

Nice one LM, was at Macy's the other day and was amazed by the sale they had in the Men's clothing section. Ralph Lauren suits, normally costing $600, were marked down to $250. I asked the sales clerk whether the big discount was because this was old stock and that they needed to make room for the new. She said that all of it was new and that they wanted to drum up some business. Wow, even Macy's is having problems.
Here is a link to a talk given by former fed head Volcker where he really dumps on Bernanke calling him a "one termer".

FYI: ". . . and this president (yes, I lower-case this man's shitmire of a tenure intentionally) . . .
Unless you are using it as his title (i.e., President Bush), it is not actually proper to capitalize "president" anyway. I have a grammar and usage site where I post the articles I write on such topics. Here is the one in which I explain this usage issue:
"On Capitalizing 'Mom' and 'Dad'--and 'Great-Aunt Betty'":

Since our government (of the people by the people for the people) bailed out Bear Stearns, shouldn't we now OWN Bear Stearns? These greed-whores need to be nationalized when being privatized fails so spectacularly.
