I've seen comments elsewhere saying Huckabee should be cut some slack for an admittedly stupid remark.
I don't understand why.
In the unlikely event of my speaking in front of the NRA, such a "joke" would never occur to me.
And... it sounded scripted to me.
Of course, I never fell for the "cuddly whackjob" act in the first place.

This is serious business here. Anyone forwarding this as constant concern trollery needs to stop it. LM expressed it in that one post and it is what runs through us all. We just cannot give our precious spoken words to this. Anyone saying this in such an offhand way or on a regular rotation of "concern" had better get right pretty damn quick. They'd better be falling on their knees or out there joining whatever security that exists making damn sure their fucked up words cannot come true.
The "passion of the heat of a thousand suns" will be like a candle flame compared to the hell that will reign down on them...... sooner or later.... but it will.
What an ignorant fuck.

As noted in the earlier thread, this "pro-life Christian" blew his dog whistle in a kennel devoted to vicious pitbulls. Want to see the true nature of the NRA, download this PDF.
And no, someone who was until recently a serious contender for the GOP nomination and still might get the Veep slot doesn't get any slack cut for this stunt. The Secret Service must be fucking livid over this.

By the way, this moron is also suggesting by his little "joke" that it's somehow wrong or cowardly to dive away when someone points a gun at you. And an audience of supposedly responsible and serious gun owners are laughing along with him.
I guess when you have a gun aimed at you, you should just take it in the face like Cheney's hunting buddy, and then apologize to the shooter later on for getting in the way.

Well, I don't want to be considered oversensitive but does Mike Huckabee know that Robert Kennedy was murdered while running for President? That there is precedent for the deranged killing presidential candidates and presidents? Or maybe Obama's wife may have considered him getting assassinated as something to stop him from running for President but IGNORES IT because hey, she believes that Obama as president can provide a temporary salve to this wretched, rotten to the core country?
It's depressing that Pastor Huckabee feels comfortable to make the joke but hey, it's all about the forgiveness, right?
God Damn America.

OTD,
I had the same reaction. What are you supposed to do if someone aims a gun at your head? Pretend your skull is made of titanium? Huck's comment seemed to come off as "real men just stand there and get blown away". What the fuck kind of psycho is this guy?
I am telling you we dodged a bullet(apropos to this discussion) in not getting Huck in the general election. This guy has some political skills and a really freaky thought process. In my opinion he was the most able to get votes from traditional Republican constituencies in the general but the corporate heads tossed him away for their more favored candidate(after Rudy! and Romney proved insolvent).
If someone aims a gun at your head I am sure that NRA standard procedure is to shoot them. Correct gun handling dictates that you always treat the gun as if it is loaded and therefore never aim it at another human being (unless of course you plan to kill them). And he got laughs for this? The NRA gun lobby is becoming less and less relevant every day.

Maybe I've got this wrong, but isn't it ILLEGAL to make any kind of "joke" about violence toward someone who is under Secret Service protection? Can't someone from Barack's group demand Huckabeast be arrested?
It's called inciting to violence. Just like all other language from someone who is a public speaker for a living, it has undue impact and "misspeaks" cannot be tolerated if they are part of a pattern of hate and oppression, as this absolutely was.
I agree with Digby that the crap about orange juice, bowling, and sniper fire is media hype. The attempts to talk about polling data and campaign analysis which emerged as the "bitterness" and "white voters" misspeaks are just tired people revealing nothing surprising, that our political process is riddled with classism and racism and there's no way to talk about analysis which is free of these prejudices. I gave them a pass. They're both moderates (on a good day) and live as elites, what else is new.
But coded language about race (in this case) and gender does damage. It is the Right wing's stock in trade, it is what provides the fuel for talk radio. And to agree with what Jesse said in the post just before this one, Barack is now the official nominee because the attacks have started. The REAL attacks.
Huckabeast, Medved, Dubya and Tom Davis all in one day? No accident. Planned cohesion. Not just slips of the tongue or even "accidental" revelations of what they really believe, but an orchestrated effort to give the voters permission to dive headlong into our country's white supremacist underbelly (as they've already had permission to go after powerful women).
And let me say one thing: Those of us who have spent decades now fighting sexist language and putdowns will need to join shoulders with those of you who find this unbelievable. He's THE Democrat now. And while I'll continue to hold him accountable for his many failures, I won't stand for racism, however it is clothed.
This kind of talk is prelude to assassination. Ask those of us who were around and active in 1968. I want to see Huckabeast BEHIND BARS.

but isn't it ILLEGAL to make any kind of "joke" about violence toward someone who is under Secret Service protection?
It is illegal to threaten the sitting President, Vice President, or members of the legislative or executive branches. If Huck had threatened Obama, then he'd be in trouble. Alluding to a threat is not against the law, especially at a public audience.
Sadly, this does not fall under the purview of something the Secret Service would prosecute.
OTOH, IANAL.
Besides - Huckabee isn't an ordinary person, he's a politician. Isn't Representative Democracy great?

The Secret Service must be fucking livid over this.
Considering the recent reports of racist comments being bruited about at the SS head office, I rather doubt it. After all, they let Bill O'Reilly get within 10 feet of Obama a few months ago - so much for providing security for candidates.

"OTD, I got a "404: file not found" when I clicked on that PDF."
Sorry about that, Stormcrow. I assumed Raw Story archived it since they broke the story. This link will get you the PDF (tested it this time).
Bear in mind that this is not a parody, but the draft of actual booklet the NRA was planning to send out to members and prospective members in 2006/2007 before it got leaked. Consider the kind of person it was aimed at. Then think about how many people with that mindset were sitting in that audience, laughing at Huckabee's little "joke"
"Considering the recent reports of racist comments being bruited about at the SS head office, I rather doubt it."
I read about those jokes. Nonetheless, the Secret Service as an organization is deadly serious and has less of a sense of humor than the most jumped-up TSA airport screener. If Obama is so much as winged by a wingnut's bullet, the SS knows that heads will roll in their agency.

Always assume a gun is loaded.
Always assume that someone who tells you they mean you harm means you harm.
Always assume someone who aims at you is going to shoot.
Always assume someone who pulls a trigger intends to kill.
This is part of the canon that kids who grow up with guns (as I did) learn by the time they're eight. The couple times I've been shot at (or had someone threaten to shoot me), I believed that they were acting with intent, and chose my course of action accordingly.
It's why I'm still here to write this today.
If I were Obama, the first order of business upon taking office would be to make damned sure the Secret Service was exceeding its affirmative action goals. I'd want brothers everywhere, if only to make sure that racist shit stayed out of the operation.

Maggie - That's exactly right. Except I don't think Obama's people should have to ask. They should assume nothing. Remember when they showed up at the school of the little 13yo girl for some post she made against bush?
They should have been there before he even left the stage. They should have made it be known to the nra at that meeting that this talk is a threat in and of itself to re-establish the line moving forward. Freedom of speech has responsibility/consequences. The line was crossed. Yes, behind bars!

WereBear-I also thought it sounded very scripted. It really seemed as if he was just waiting for it. Hateful nasty PASTOR(snakeoil)Huck. At the NRA???
I just read that the NRA had banned all guns from the convention. HAAAAAAAAAAAAAA HAAAAAAAAAAAAAA HAAAAAAAAAAAAAA. What could those manly men be afraid of?

Yes, cbm, I agree. It was just too long, with too careful pauses.
And the look on his face when he said it. Yup, planned for his audience.
I never fell for Shuckabee. Even before I read up on him. First, I've got some serious "preacher antibodies" from my upbringing in a fundamentalist culture.
And second, admittedly, subjective response-- he's got mean little eyes.
