The new estimated death toll is 9000 (!), and my guess is that it will go up. A horrifying 900 (!) high school students were buried alive in the rubble of their school. How awful!
I teach college English. Many of my students in all four of my sections this term are from China. I just sent out a group email telling them to let me know if they need accommodations for the final exam and the final paper, in case they are too worried about their loved ones to concentrate right now.
I fervently hope none of my students are affected, of course, but I fear they could be, since they come from many different regions of China.

Horrific, simply horrific. The pictures coming off the news services from both China and Myanmar are harrowing.

doctors without borders is a noble group. i personally know a member of long term standing. he's a great guy. he spends six months a year in palm springs doing face lifts and other elective cosmetic work so that he can spend the other six months going to the most hellish places on earth to do reconstructive surgery on folks who run afoul of the machines of war.
he's a good man. one of the finest i know. he pays his team, buys the equipment, pays the transportation, all of the expenses involved with doing his work himself. any help given to this fine organization is money well spent.

This is why we get out of Iraq, eliminate the national debt and stop imperialist adventures. Remember Katrina didn't even hit New Orleans and look what happened. San Francisco is in the middle of a quake prone region and another low-incidence high-fatality event like a giant quake along the New Madrid fault in Missouri would tax this country's ability to effectively respond.
We are nowhere near as densely populated as East and South Asia but any of these things can hit concentrated areas as well. The time to get serious about dealing with these issues in this country is now.

wengler, not to mention when we are in trouble our ability to help, as a leading 1st world nation, is great inhibited. The year of the tsunami I was amazed out how much our citizens helped, gave, volunteered and donated. This gets harder and harder as we struggle with our own failing infrastructure and economic security. We will be unable to take a leading role as Good Samaritan so all many struggling nations will know of us is our militaristic invasions and grandstanding.

trouble in mind, baby, i'm blue
but i won't be blue always
yeah, the sun gonna shine
in my back door someday
i'm goin' down to the river
gonna sit in my rockin' chair
lord if the blues overtake me
i'm gonna rock on out of here
cause i got trouble in mind
you know that i'm blue
but i won't be blue always
yeah, the sun gonna shine
in my back door some day
i'm gonna lay, lay down my head
on that sad old railroad iron
i'm gonna let that 2:19
pacify my mind
i got trouble, trouble in mind
baby, you know that i'm blue
but i won't be blue always. . .

I'm no supporter of the Chinese regime, but at least they're getting with the programme with regard to saving the lives of their fellows. The grotesque fucktards in Burma on the other hand.......... How about Operation Burmese Freedom?

Bollox: Well, the sad fact is that the Burmese junta is barely less efficient than BushCo with Katrina. That's quite embarrassing that China does so much well in this case.
