New Yawk, New Yawk!

The only thing juicier than NYC politics is LM's take on it.

Gravatar LM, I have to admit I love how you put the political scene in NYC into a literate and teeth-on-the-bone-to-the-marrow perspective. I've been convinced that the only way to save the GOP, to sever its ties with the Neocons and the Bombs-n-Jesus bunch, is to tear the Party down to its roots and start over.

The "Destroy the village in order to save it" school of politics, if you will.

Which is why Fossella's follies caused me to laugh out loud when I saw it on the TV.

Gravatar Nice day for a white wedding! Killer 'shop, LM

Gravatar " he's that dog at the circus that walks / hops gimpily on its hind legs—and is cheered for not because he's doing it particularly well, but mainly because he's even doing it at all."

In computer programming, this is called "dancing-bear-ware" for the same reason. (See The Inmates are Running the Asylum by Alan Cooper)

Gravatar OK, LM, they have a mook running in the GOP placeholder slot but since it's Long Island he may well win. Don't expect otherwise.
And about the wonderful Democratic Party, I have one word to offer: Hubris, yes, with a capital.
The US is just at the roll out stage of it's most troubling set of difficulties it has ever had. The Empire is over and The Nation is plagued.
Lucky for them, the Democrats will preside over the festivities.
Somewhere, there is a very large rabbit inside of an even larger hat.
I hope the Dems can find it.
Given the dynamics at the moment, like you LM, I think it is a pretty sure bet that the Dems will control all of the Congress and the Executive branch for at least the next two years {until
late 2010} but by then, unless there is some phenomenally hard work done by the Dems to hold the whole works together and some large dose of luck, they will be suffering the consequences of the dismal science.
We are not done with the GOP yet. They may very well just decide to hibernate until conditions are more favorable.
I think if I were asked to offer them a strategy that is the only one with merit. Rest up, hatch some new Contract With America, and bide your time. Don't get me wrong, I can't see where they have anything really going on, but I am not your typical US voter.
I'd just like to say one more time: the glory of being back in power will fade really fast for the Democrats.
The mountain they have to climb and drag the population over with them is very steep, high and slippery. Beating the Republicans to the head of the line is the easy part.

Gravatar Oh man, the look on his face in that mug shot: This is one guy who knows he's just screwed the pooch -- big time.

Gravatar His lips are still wine-stained in his mug shot.

Vito power-less. Hehe

Gravatar Is there a good reason the City doesn't tell Staten Island to take its Mississippi-north ass out on its own and secede already?

Gravatar Staten Island knows it can't secede. They receive more in city $ervices than they pay into the city coffers. Those are just empty threats that pop up every now and again and then die down when the residents sober up.

Gravatar “Is there a good reason the City doesn't tell Staten Island to take its Mississippi-north ass out on its own and secede already?”

Remember the cops who Giuliani whipped into a riot down at City Hall in '92? That racist bunch lives primarily in THAT borough. It was the escape hatch for those civil servants who don't like being around Black and Brown folk. Yeah.

Should S.I. pull that shit again, I suppose the greater city could cal the bluff and let 'em taste what being cut off from the massive revenue-generating spigot—as well as a drastic reduction in the federal largesse is like.. but realistically, there'd be some sort of shitty, passive-aggressive NYPD job action enacted by their huge resident cop population.

That's the barrel residents are over with this...and it sucks ass.

Gravatar -Cue the Temp's rollin' stones

-Kelis shaking dat milk

-Vito creepin' to his Baby Momma crib

-Joe (the top) strollin' down the aisle with Johnny (bottom)

I LOVE THIS MAN!!!!!!

In 1932, we were in the throes of a depression. We fought against it, and were making some headway, as war clouds formed over Europe again. And also in Asia. We overcame all that. Why can't we overcome this? All it will take is hard work.

Gravatar You think Americans in this day and age are up for some hard work? If so, it will be what saves our culture, because working together promotes understanding.
Here's hoping.....

Gravatar Go LM GO! That was simply operatic. Beautiful analysis of the NY/NYC GOP.

BTW: I remember my parents laughing out loud as to Rocky's demise. They thought it was poetic justice for the pompous ass (although my Dad's brother had once been a Rocky fan, 1964 against Goldwater).

But I digress.

Great writing! Thanks!

Gravatar I suspect Bill Clinton will depart this mortal coil in much the same way Rocky did... and it really doesn't sound like such a bad way to go.

And I think that NYC ought to expel SI... and then secede from New York State along with the suburban counties. SI can stay with West New York.

Gravatar Aren't those ip wi fi tree cams great? We know when you get relatives to sign petitions for one another. We know when the witness hasn't really witnessed. We know how you make "adjustments" to petitions. You have betrayed out trust and abused our years of support. Now we will see which aith and culture really breeds corruption. Giuliani corralled protesters against 1999 Serb cathedral midnight Easter while McCain told airmen to write Happy Easter on bombs, because Joe Dioguardi ’s heroin lobby paid them. Orthodox average one and a half graduate degrees while you popecrawlers are dropouts, needing unions to show you around. You ate glis-glis and blamed others for plague. You may have the voting carcasses but we have the brains and money and are sending your jobs to India where they know how to fight muslims.

Gravatar What was that?

Gravatar Really fine writing LM. I enjoyed.

Loved the Rocky part, I laughed my ass off then and now. Need something to laugh about, right?

I remember reading your piece about the Riot by Rudy. Excellent.

Just deserts for that crime agaist nature. Hubris smells really bad when it gets hit by daylight. Took long enough though.

More like: [Krusty The Clown]What the hell was that???[/KTC]

Gravatar I know what Vito needs...

A BOOT TO THE HEAD!

You should have seen when National Lampoon did an issue with a feature entitled "Rocky Comics", a biography of Rockefeller in comic book form. It was one thing for a sixteen-year old kid (as I was then) hearing the innuendo about Ms. Marshack in the national media (in the days before the Internet), quite another to open up "Rocky Comics" to see the splash page revealing the Grim Reaper catching Rockefeller literally, with his pants down, in flagre delicto.

LM, you might want to check out that reformation.org site you linked to regarding Ms. Marshack. I took a look, first at the link itself (and its final anti-Catholic smear), then to the main page. Rather nutty.

Gravatar DJ, I remember that bit in NatLamp! I thought it was hilarious.

Gravatar Great piece as usual, LM. Knowing SI, that unpolished Peyton Place, the residents elect another GOPer from the Molinari mafia (not PC, but how else to describe the political dynamics around Todt Hill?) sooner than a Dem who'll make them happily accept their own manifold moral hypocrisies.

"I'd just like to say one more time: the glory of being back in power will fade really fast for the Democrats.

I truly hope Obama understands the term "managing expectations," because that's what he'll have to do starting with his inauguration day speech (if not earlier). His first term will be about sweeping up after the elephants with lions at his back.

Start with the iron laws of economic cycles, resource scarcity and global demographics. Combine with 8 years of lost opportunities, incompetence, and sheer greed and malice on the part of the GOP. Bring to a boil sometime after China strikes the sets of its Olympics Potemkin Village, and you have the makings of a particularly nasty 4 years for Americans.

Optimism and hope are nice, but they're not plans. Obama needs to temper the positive message with some hard truths. If Americans don't want to accept that, they deserve McSame.

Gravatar I suspect Bill Clinton will depart this mortal coil in much the same way Rocky did... and it really doesn't sound like such a bad way to go.

Except to one's partner. It can be quite traumatic actually.

Gravatar His first term will be about sweeping up after the elephants with lions at his back.

More dobermans than lions. Lions are wild animals associated with nobility and courage. Attack dogs are domesticated creatures who pretty much do what their owners tell them to do.

Gravatar sdh: There's a simple solution... sleep with people who are in to that sort of thing.

Gravatar LM, That reformation.org site is loony-tunes. They're geocentrists and virulently anti-Catholic, among other sins against reason and sanity.

Gravatar Dick Gidron Cadillac! (I remember that name...)

great analysis, LM, as always...

Gravatar UPDATE -- The Republican Party candidate died over the weekend, may he RIP. At this time I have to withdraw my prediction that he would win the race and go with the odds that the Democratic Party may take the seat.
One never knows.
