FWIW, I read somewhere recently (Harpers Index?) that in the 2000 election cycle, something like 1/2 of McCain's supporters said they wouldn't support bush. On the "de": I don't think there's any real, established law, but IANAL. However, I recall a case a few decades ago in which some guy was making a legal name change to some name with a "de" in front, and the local judge who was to approve it denied the petition on the grounds that the Constitution forbids the granting of titles and patents of nobility!
A commentator (probably in the New Republic, which was not trash then) wondered how that decision would have sat with the late Judge Vandevanter. Or Devanter. Or Ter.

tlg - the dnc did strip a delegate in Minnesota, I believe, of her delegate status for saying she'd vote for McCain. That was a few weeks ago. Looks like the dnc needs to really start looking at who has infiltrated the DNC over the past years. These people are not Democrats and should be stripped of any status in the party. They are, of course, free to vote for who ever but this threatening tone cannot be tolerated, and especially not given in to.
