Gravatar I think it explains, unfortunately, the vague "I'm not sure about Obama," bs I hear... they won't come out and say it, because at least THAT is no longer okay, but it's there.

I don't know how you'd hammer reflection home upon people who have spent their lives NOT reflecting upon themselves. Instead, they only mirror vague pronouncements others feed to them.

NOW, in a time of economic crisis, might break through. But they have been screwing themselves along with us all this time.

Gravatar Oh. If you like that one, you'll love this one~!

Gravatar You put a smile on my face with the ref' to the Puma TSS LoLo's (I'm going to call them that from now on) my Brotha. If you're serious about what you said in the post just give me a holla - I'm always available to do some 'net research and pull up goodies you can use.

Gravatar why havent we shitcanned teh troll yet?

Gravatar oh and if this racism shit works on the old folks, perhpas its tiem to send the old folks to a nice abusive home and start fixing the country the nicly fucked up for us.

Gravatar A key to this is to raise doubt. Is Obama what I thought he was or is he something different? The racial component is there but the core issue is "Have I been duped about who this man is?"

The solution is more Obama. I think the more people see the man in action the better to dissuade even the low interest voters he is the real deal. That and getting Hillary out of the race...

Gravatar “why havent we shitcanned the troll yet?”

No, no, no. Let him hang around a little bit. I haven't flexed the old slap-around muscles in a while.

This could be fun.

Gravatar I’d say the theme of the ad was apostasy; that Obama (actually his posse, but whatever) hate America. The problem is that the Right correctly see that in a time of economic downturn they have a very uphill struggle to win this election in November. Normally they would be holding video tapes like this in reserve. Now sure when October rolls around we will see videos of people jumping from the towers on 9/11with Rev. Wrights words in the background; but by then it will be too late; it will be old news. Since Obama has the nomination pretty much wrapped up; the Right’s only hope is to keep Hilary in it as long as possible.

I’d also say this video is preaching to the choir. Most non-political people would be turned off by the bombastic repetition and the overtly propagandistic editing. It is clearly aimed at wing nut faithful, the base, and that is also a sign of weakness. I check out the wingy blogs and Obama does actually have his fans there.

As for America fearing angry black men nothing could be further from the truth. A quiet black man reading a book might freak a few people out but the entire American pop cultural machine is about feeding America’s insatiable desire for angrier and angrier black men.

The right concentrating on racial fear is just where we want them. Obama’s people should respond with economic fear. Wonder why the Fed scrambles like a henpecked husband every time the stock market squeals? So many boomers have invested their retirements in equities and now the whole house of cards is starting to crumble. The question that will decide this election is whether on-the-fence boomers going to fear Obama or Wall Street more to snatch their wallet?

Gravatar Damn fine post. We've got such a learning curve to ride in this country. Some, probably most, will never make it up the mofo hill. But Lower Manattanite? You've drawn us the map up. Thanks.

Gravatar I deffer to LM, i would love to see the smackdown

Gravatar It isn't just Habeeb.
Bill Clinton questioned the patriotism of that ungrateful Negro Obama last week.
He'll do the same thing to the ungrateful Richardson next week.

Gravatar Yes!

great analysis, LM and count me in for the work...as with the entire GNB community, I bet. So many of us were brought up to live up to that 'more perfect union' and don't see any good reason to stop when it could be so close...

Gravatar I can't help but think of this song from 1963.

Gravatar GREAT read - well done and keep up the great work!

-Joey

Gravatar Kevin, I would say that American pop culture loves angry African-American men only when they're killing each other or beating up women. But angry African-American men attacking white racism? Even Public Enemy was banished from the mainstream after a few years in the spotlight. Folks are typically surprised when I tell them PE are still around.

Gravatar So what approach do we unleash on these crazy wingnuts? Remember, it demands a response. A non-response like Kerry with the Swift Boaters was deadly to his campaign.

Gravatar A similar video would be McCaine senior moments, looking old and haggard, inter-cut with "problem" shots like an IED explosion, stock market falling, and then tie it up with Bush grins and hugs with McSame... and the "Is this who you want to lead America?"

At least it would be more accurate than the crap that started this discussion.

Gravatar gawdamm sir. that's brilliant stuff. you've managed to put some telling and informative words to things i've been feeling for a very long time. (and i'm pushing 60 hard) let me start off by saying thank you. thank you. thank you.

the biggest thing i got from obama was hope that the discussion, and the work to be done on the issue of race in our country might be elevated. somehow taken past the fear. of course, there will have to be some truth told and some hard changes made deep inside us all.

i have tools, and i spent my summers from junior high through high school in the melon and lettuce fields of arizona. i ain't afraid of work. in the words of caesar chavez. . .

si, se puede mis amigos. vinceremos.

(yes, we can my friends. we shall overcome.)

even if we don't get it all the home we can get it further down the road.

Gravatar I figure by the time the GOP convention hits, they'll be dropping the N-word in every other speech.

And if McCain still wins, you can just kiss America good-bye, frankly.

Gravatar Word.

Gravatar 2 Questions:

Do these whackjobs ever think about the fact theat the white guy on the poduium with Smith was wearing a button too, and had there back? I mean it wasn't like they were shunned by there fellow athletes they had their backs.

Are thsese fuckers going to lose it when someone (and you know somone will) either boycotts the medla ceremony, or opens their jecket to show a "Free Tibet" t-shirt, because thier is literally a 100% chance that someone does that, the only question is who (my money's on Phelp's, I'd like to say Bron-- may be Duncan or Kobe, they seem possible--, but c'mon that's not happening, too bead Nash isn't American, he'd do it, they only other athlete right now I can think of who'd do it is Delgado, and PR's not repping it in Baseball), are they going to freak out about that or is onnly when the spotlight of moral indignation is turned inward that hatred forms? (Seriously though if say Duncan or Marion does something like that they'll be tossed under the Bus so fast its not funny).

Gravatar LM,

I was going to comment on how this video had absolutely no effect on me but then I read your explanation. It finally dawned on me that Obama v. McCain is going to be ENTIRELY a generational battle. Old versus New. My grandparents' generation versus my generation. The makers of war versus the funders and fodder of that war. All I can say is we gotta kick the old people's asses. The real battle is going to occur in getting enough adults in the 40s and 50s to back Obama. The ones that are still decades away from retirement, have an interest in not paying for this war to continue because they won't have sped off their mortal coil before the debt explodes.

The future v. the past. I think it's a battle we can win.

Gravatar mmmm... Rosie Perez...

Gravatar Nice analysis, although I don't think the attack spot itself is that good, because its slant is fairly glaring, its technique is rather annoying, and it's aimed for people who already who already weren't going to vote for Obama (the same prod. co. has two Buckley videos for TownHall.com). It's valuable to see the tactics they've used and will continue to try, though.

Gravatar Uh, who's "Pubic Enemy"?

Gravatar socraticsilence: the white man with Smith and Carlos was Peter Norman. He died a few years ago. Smith and Carlos were pallbearers at his funeral.

What is less known is that Norman, a white Australian, donned a badge on the podium in support of their cause, the Olympic Project for Human Rights (OPHR). It was also Norman who suggested that Smith and Carlos share the black gloves used in their salute, after Carlos had left his gloves in the Olympic Village. This is the reason for Tommie Smith raising his right fist, while John Carlos raised his left. Asked about his support of Smith and Carlos' cause by the world's press, Norman said he opposed his country's government's White Australia policy.

Gravatar Thank you for the info about Peter Norman. Never knew his name or his story. Good on him for doing the right thing when it mattered.

Gravatar Wengler; absolutely we can win it.

And to hell with THIS kind of "chicken little" panic-mode bullshit:

http://www.truthout.org/docs_200...6/ 032408R.shtml

I trust the voters more than I trust the party hacks.

I'm also leery of the "mini-convention" trying to shove Clinton down Obama's throat as his VP.

Her smears have been so bad, that I don't think he would accept it, but stranger things have happened.

My concerns are somewhat allayed by the fact that Obama is way smart enough to know that Hillary would be almost as toxic to us in the second spot, as she would be in the top slot.

Gravatar HT to Larue for sending me this...

Gravatar Amuse, I'm ready for THAT clip.

Where do we send the money? :o)

Gravatar BTW - did this thread make anyone else dig out their own copy of "FOABP"? I listened to it for the first time in almost a decade - all 60-odd minutes at work - and I'm surprised how well it's held up musically. Total and utter brilliance - 6 out of 5 stars. Better than "It takes a nation of millions..."

Gravatar LM, YER A HOSS!

Great post.

It's gonna get real ugly, and you, and we, know it.

It's gonna get REAL ugly.

And race is gonna be a large part of it, and has already played a large part in it.

Teh Shill is all over this implicit racist rhetoric that the right wing has brought to bear, top to bottom.

And the longer she's allowed to sling it, in accord with the frightened white minority who sling the racist card, the worse the Dem chances will really BE, against McCain.

We should had a swelling SWEEP of the GOP, top to bottom, and now the fuckin DLC and Shillary are gonna steal it out from under us, and likely cost us the House AND Senate.

And racism is at the core of it all, and the MSM has spawned and supported it all along.

And some of the blogs have been culpable in this too. Some of them SELF PROFESSED progressive blogs, that is.

And racism is a tool to wield power.

It always has been.

Here's to hoping that Obama makes it.

I don't care if he's perfect, I've bought his message. I never bought The Shill's message.

If Obama goes dirty on me in his time as Prez, I'll vote his ass out.

But dammit, since Kuch and Edwards are gone, I'll run with the best choice.

I'll run with Obama.

Gravatar And man, I'm JUST not expressing myself well.

Obama offers me hope. No one else does.

I'm jaded, I DID Camelot, I don't want to be hurt again.

But Obama offers me hope.

N this aging hippie NEEDS some hope. *G*

Gravatar Chasing the 1968 hardhat vote. Brilliant! Except the part where the vast majority of those voters are stone cold dead. The SS McCain is headed onto the same actuarial rocks that sunk Bush I and Dole.

Gravatar LM--PURE POETRY.

KUDOS on one of your best pieces ever.

FWIW, I happen to own a copy of and really like FOABP. If the wingnuts actually listened to the whole album and actually *gasp* read the lyrics and didn't just fixate on the military-style video that was made for MTV for one of the songs, they would see that the album was a commentary on lots of social issues both inside and outside of the Black community (the song "Pollywannacracker" comes to mind).

I especially enjoy playing FOABP during the summer when my windows are open so that I can, uh, "share" with my "neighbors"--a crooked cop sports bar on the corner that makes books. It almost makes up for the guys pissing and smoking in my vestibule and the puke and broken glass on the sidewalk, but I digress.

Keep up the amazing work, LM!
