Ever notice how Republicans simply cannot even get close to this many people out? I remember when 9ui11ani was still running and his crowds were constantly miniscule... 100 people or so - and that was when he was the top dog. Even Glamour Grandpa Fred Thompson at the height of his campaign was speaking to small crowds. Can McCain even get out 7,500? I haven't heard of him getting more than a couple thousand.
The only time conservatives can get this many people out is when they're having their occasional 'pro-life' rallies or listening to billy Graham (and I hesitate to even include Graham in the 'conservative' category). they simply can't get people out for their candidates.
I would argue that it's because their agenda simply doesn't appeal to the American public as a whole and the American people are smarter than conservatives give them credit for being; the American people know they're getting screwed by Republicans.

At the Comment thread on the Portland newspaper site, people said CNN and other TV news coverage never scanned the crowd to show the size.

Reading the comments from WaPo....Some of you may understand why Obama is a weak candidate. Look for yourself. Please remember this happened in Oregon, which is no surprise at all. Also, the idea of riots after the next election is becoming more believable because the media fooled so many of you. Obama was just a distraction. The Emperor never had a damn thread of clothing to begin with.

Do you really believe that readers of this blog are bamboozled by the media?
That none of us has researched the candidates and their records?

Frankly, Sean, the idea of riots at any time would not surprise me.
The fact that riots are not occurring at any given moment is what surprises me. I know civilization is a frail construct. That's why I so desperately want the people in charge of government to be both interested in and good at keeping civilization civil.

If the Emperor truly has no clothes, Sean, I'd rather look at Obama naked than GWB.
And 75K or 65K, none of the GOP candidates could ever field that many people for a political rile 'em up.

"People. Want. Change. Now."
emphatic panhandlers?
i still wish there was one decent candidate in the race. l'il george the retarded prince is sabotaging everything in sight. all of the wishes and dreams being attached to obama are swell but i can't help but think he'll be just as hamstrung as anyone else. the only trouble is that when he can't deliver on the change and hope, when it turns out that yes, he can't... all of those wishes will go sour and turn on him. given the intentional and disturbing mess that bush is leaving in the wake of his squalid rule, it would almost be better to have a repiglican take the reins and own the fallout.
america needs a leader of courage and substance. looks like america would rather have a rock star. tune in for next week's exciting episode of president idol. i think i'll spend the next few years mourning that the democrats had neither the wisdom nor foresight to get behind chris dodd or dennis kucinich.

maybe we should stop expecting anyone to be perfect.

You'll all have to forgive Sean. His peasant mentality can't deal with a political rally of this size that not only doesn't involve the usual scapegoating, but whose headliner is one of the usual scapegoats.
Pity Sean, the frightened little serf hiding behind empty cynicism.

I think it's snobbishness to denigrate Obama as a "rock star."
A food can't be good unless no one has heard of it.
A band can't be good if they are popular.
And so forth.
Go ahead and think so. But even in my little neck of the woods, I can get great pie.
Pink Floyd packs them in, and they are a great band.
And Obama is a great candidate.
