Most Americans hear:
Al-Qaeda blah Shi'ia blah blah-blah blah blah blah blah blah Iran-blah blah blah blah blah blah.
It's obvious what he's doing, where he's going & how he plans to get there.

I read his statement as:

Does this make sense? He's lumping them together but he's not necessarily saying that al Qaeda is being trained in Iraq. In this particular quote, anyway. In his other recent quotes, I think it was quite clear that he was just plain incorrect. Now, even though he's been corrected, he's decided to continue doing it and has made a very minor semantic change so that he can continue to dupe his supporters.
If this is a preview of a McCain administration then be afraid.
It would be nice if someone would point out to McCain that Al Qaeda represents a tiny percentage of the insurgency, that Iraqis in general despise them and will gladly hunt them down like dogs when the US leaves.

McCain's comments make sense if he wants to go to war with Iran.
The conflation isn't a mistake, it's deliberate. McCain hasn't found a war he hates.
If McCain wins in November, it will be all the killing all of the time.
I think he's doing it on purpose, too. Or if mixing them up wasn't on purpose, trying to associate them in people's minds, just like GWB did with al-Qaeda and Saddam Hussein, is on purpose.
I'm really not surprised at this. Unfortunately, most Americans are blissfully ignorant of other cultures, other countries and geography. And sadly, Senator McCain has fallen into this unenviable category and/or plays to his knee-jerk jingoism for a cheap political sound bite.
Don't forget the distinction and big cultural differences between Iraq and Iran.
Iraq is an Arab nation.
Iran is Persian.
They have distinct cultural histories. Different languages.
Even if they are both majority Shia, they aren't necessarily going to be friends for historical/cultural reasons.
