I read the article in the Times regarding the 3-day, 1200-target plan to dismantle or decapitate Iran's military, and I have a question.
Don't you think the thinkers up in Tehran have figured this out by now?
Some places you won't be able to move, while others can be set up as convenient targets for us to expend ammunition on. While we're doing that, Iran can send a few hundred thousand basijis across the border into Iraq to put our troops there through some terrible changes. And that's not mentioning what'll happen to Israel and the other Gulf States (some of whom have already been warned by Iran).
The Swiss diplomat's contention that an attack on Iran would be catastrophic to Western interests is a correct assessment - but common sense is not Bush's strong suit.

Seems to me that this new wave of "doubling down" is simply to ensure Armageddon.

Wanna know what it's about now?
This is what it's about. Or, at least, it's a LOT of what it's about.
:o)
And I'm not as optimistic as the writer of this piece, that the Parliament will rubber-stamp what the Maliki government (and bushCo) wants, in the oil bill.
And let me point out that the SPECIFIC language about who gets to buy how much oil, and for what price, still hasn't been made public, and may not be, before the bill is debated.
For example, the american and Brit companies are clearly thinking that they should get the biggest and best cuts off the carcass. But the Dutch, and the Russians, etc., etc., want access, too.
And, as the writer points out, the Kurds are already selling out the back door, from the small fields they now control. (Hellloooo! Can anyone say : "Kirkuk Referendum"???)
Some of the Shiites, perched on top of 80% of the country's reserves
(they're shallow, light, and easily and cheaply refined; if Iraq had refineries that were not under a permanent RPG threat.) want a highly autonomous...region...in the south, with the hands on the oil tap being in Basra, instead of Baghdad. Other Shiites, including Sadr, seem to be ardent nationalists, still holding on to the idea of a unified "Greater Iraq".
But Maliki's government is weaker than it's been, and Allawi is lurking in the shadows, willing and eager to play oil-poodle for Exxon-Mobile and Chevron-Texaco, etc...
As I say, I don't think the conclusions of the writer about the near-passage of the oil bill, are accurate. It makes too good a hostage to let go of cheaply. :o)

andrea, point is that there is corruption a plenty but the ostriches here are more concerned with conduct in a mens toilet that the prospect that foriegn powers are buying yet another presidential candidate as well as the second, third, and fourth stringers.
since it dissappeared, here ya go again...
Hong Kong native Norman Hsu. Hsu, a prodigious Democrat donor, evaded the law for 15 years over grand theft swindling charges. He managed to remain a fugitive while raking in hundreds of thousands of dollars for Democrat candidates and officeholders -- and posing openly for photographs with the likes of Hillary Clinton.
Clinton took the lion's share of political cash ($174,000) from Hsu and his network of suspected donor-bundlers whose campaign checks dwarfed their income. New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo and New York Governor (and former Attorney General) Eliot Spitzer accepted the largest sums of direct cash from Hsu.
The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee took $122,000. The state Democratic parties or committees of Tennessee, New York, and New Jersey took from Hsu directly.
Of 32 organizations that took money from Hsu and his associates, 10 were state Democratic parties.
84 individuals who received money from Hsu and his associates included 17 Gubernatorial candidates, 17 Congressional candidates, 27 Senatorial candidates, and a variety of statewide and local candidates. All were Democrats, (Except of Tom Gallagher, Florida)
Including candidate-specific PACs, these individuals have taken just over $1 million from Hsu's group since the 2004 cycle. . . . Another 22 organizations received support from Hsu's network since 2004, primarily Democratic campaign committees and state Democratic parties."

Is China quietly dumping US Treasuries?
By Ambrose Evans-Pritchard

A sharp drop in foreign holdings of US Treasury bonds over the last five weeks has raised concerns that China is quietly withdrawing its funds from the United States, leaving the dollar increasingly vulnerable.
China threatens `nuclear option' of dollar sales
Data released by the New York Federal Reserve shows that foreign central banks have cut their stash of US Treasuries by $48bn since late July, with falls of $32bn in the last two weeks alone.

And there is NO FUCKING END IN SIGHT.
