tlg and everyone --
Thank you so much for being supportive of the strike. *hugs*
I understand being bummed about Ellen.
The thing is, speaking as a writer -- one screenplay complete, working on my second, gearing up for a documentary -- till a character is tested, we don't know truly what the character is made of.
Take your female lead and have her, picking an example from nowhere, put on a television show and cry a lot, and we could build an entire screenplay... Girl makes good, overcomes adversity, rises to the top. But we don't ever necessarily see into the girl's heart. The screenplay still lacks a certain something.
Now take the same precise screenplay, and right at the very triumph of her career, after she's fought herself up out of the muck and mire, overcome all that damn adversity and risen to the frigging top, right then... ask her to sacrifice EVERYTHING, to honor a principle that buys her personally nothing, and costs her (so she thinks), everything...
Now we've got us a screenplay. Now we get to see what the girl's heart is made of.
That's what us writers do.
We take our characters (and oh how we love them), and place them in the very toughest situations we can find, at precisely the perfect moment, to expose for everyone, their heart.
Ellen's heart lies open, saying, "It's all about me."
And that, is that.
Strike on. (She's dead to me forever.)
