okay, now this isn't fair, now I'm totally hungry, and since I'm sitting in your house, why aren't you feeding me ?!
seriously, though, eating more healthily is one my major promises to myself this year, and this is a great way to start, thanks...

HNY to all too! Let's hope that this turns out to be a year where we can see good changes in our country instead of the turns for the worse we have unfortunately become sort of used to for the last 7 years.
Thank you TLG for those food blog links. I love food blogs too and one of my favorites is whatwereeating.com....they also have some amazing food photos. As a visual person, those photos really suck me in.
And finally, let me give a food/book recommendation. If you like to bake bread, get yourself immediately "Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day" by Jeff Hertzberg and Zoe Francois. WOW. I have made amazing bread every day since I got this book. If you have used the no knead bread recipe from the NYT last year and like it, this is similar but much better and easier. You make a wet batch of dough that requires no kneading, just mixing together and it stays in a tub in your refrigerator for up to a couple of weeks. When you want to make a loaf, you pull off a chunk, form it into a round loaf, let it sit for 40 minutes and then bake for 30 minutes. Amazing is really the only way to describe it. A crunchy, crunchy crust, a nice crumb inside, great flavor....there's just nothing better. The book also has other loaves you can make, but so far I can't pull myself away from the basic loaf to try the ryes or the olive breads or the pastries. The dough also starts to take on a sourdough quality as it sits in your refrig so each day the bread tastes a little different and better.
I like the farmgirl link...if I weren't old now, that would be what I'd like to do with my life....I applaud her for taking on a complete change of perspective.

Okay, in total immodesty, I'd like to recommend my own food blog - http://seasonalontariofood.blogspot.com/.
Don't worry if you're not in Ontario; our food seasons are reasonably in sync with a wide swath of central North America.
I'm not a fanatic about anything, not even my premise. My food is generally healthy and vegetable-laden but I always put the taste first. In spite of my love of cooking, I'm also not one to spend hours in the kitchen except on rare occasions, so my dishes tend to be reasonably simple. I'm not a vegetarian, but I make a lot of vegetarian (or easily adaptable) dishes. I also do a lot of wheat free (sometimes gluten free) cooking. Just don't come looking to me for lots of really sweet and gooey desserts. I'll make 'em and post 'em, but once or twice a year is as good as that gets. Most of my desserts are fruit based.
Regards, Ferdzy - long-time regular reader, very occasional poster.
P.S. And a happy New Year to everybody here.

Ferdzy, thanks for the link to your food page....man, that butternut squash and pears looks and sounds great! I like to roast just about any vegetable and rutabagas and butternut squash as well as acorn squash are always high on my list. I made a jerk marinade a few minutes ago and am marinating some baby back ribs for later....maybe I'll make that butternut squash/pear deal to go with the ribs....mmmmm.

Thanks, Abo Gato. Mmm, jerk ribs. Sounds fab.
Actually, now that I've plugged myself (gosh, that sounds rude) I should plug some other people too (Hmm...)
I suspect a lot of people know about http://www.tastespotting.com/. Best food porn out there.
http://www.ethicurean.com/ is a good place to go and look at some of the political/ethical issues around food.

Ferdzy: Damn those recipes look fantastic! It's winter - nice to see homage to the humble root veggies!
I'll have to head to a farmers market and pick up some stuff - but I have a fridge to clean out from the left over veggies I bought to make a beef stew (with a quasi Sauerbraten twist to it) a couple weeks ago.
You mentioned organic - do you have any markets you prefer - not knowing of course what part of Ontario you're in?

Thor, I am in Cambridge. I buy a quarter cow and a lamb each fall from Meeting Place Organic Farm (they are a link on my sidebar.) As for veggies, I worry less about it, and just buy them organic when I can find them. I like to get around and visit as many farmers markets as I can during the summer and fall. I rate local as more important than organic, if I have to choose.

Yikes! How come no one has mentioned Chowhound? It not only has food discussion, but it has restaurant boards where you can ask or answer questions about specific restaurants.

Thanks Kim,
There is also a new social Networking site FOHBOH for restaurant professionals, it launched in Dec. Kind of cool.

I could have sworn I got hooked on Cooking For Engineers from one of Steve's (RIP) sites. I really like the recipe file section with the compact recipe cards and kitchen notes section.
