We must invade Italy! The money from pizza and red wine sales will make it possible for the war to pay for itself!

God forbid that there should be, you know, a rational discussion of this within the nation's polity......... that the US's supposed ally, Saudi Arabia, is something of a 'problem'.

Italy?
The third-highest number of suicide bombers in Iraq are Italians?,
You think maybe Bush can't read, and just assumes that, since "Italy" starts with an "i" and contains an "a" that it's really "Iran" instead?

I can't wait to lay this on my right-wing coworkers. It'll be fun to watch heads exploding.
But seriously, why the blistering fuck hasn't anyone confronted the Bushies about this? Why are people so afraid of pissing off the Saudis?
Oh, silly me. Oil, of course.

of course, if the US hadn't invaded Iraq, and persisted in occupying the country with over 140,000 troops, there wouldn't be a "problem" with the Saudi, suicide bombers, or anyone else
but, then, it has always been the nature of imperial conquest to scapegoat others for one's own failings, not just for the obvious reason, but because it also helps set the stage for justifying future conquests (such as, say, Iran)
as along as people persist in addressing the occupation in terms of who is causing problems for the US, we can expect that it will continue for quite a long time
it is, however, quite a good way of framing the issue, however falsely, for the coming Democratic presidential campaigns

...just sayin'...
C.J.Cregg
[beat] Outraged? I'm barely surprised. This is a country where women aren't
allowed to drive a car. They're not allowed to be in the company of any man other than a close relative, they're required to adhere to a dress code that would make the Maryknoll Nun look like Malibu Barbie. They beheaded 121 people last year for robbery,
rape, and drug trafficking, they've no free press, no elected government, no political parties, and the royal family allows the religious police to travel in groups of six, carrying
nightsticks and they freely and publicly beat women. But "Brutus is an
honorable man." (snip)
Am I outraged? No, Steve. No Chris. No, Mark. That is Saudi Arabia,
our partners in peace. Bonnie, then Scott.

people really need to read up on the creation of Saudi Arabia by the British and the US in the early to middle part of the 20th Century
the British, and then, FDR, cemented the control of the House of Saud and its Wahhabi relatives over the area
sure, it's good to vent moral outrage over the repressive nature of Saudi society, but note, that, historically, it has been the secular left that has emphasized the brutalities of Saudi life
liberals and conservatives, as part of the bipartisan consensus, sealed a pact of silence where the Saudis are concerned, considering them an indispensable ally
my point? instead of engaging in feel good rants against the Saudis, you might want to consider engaging in some introspection as to how the US helped create the power of the House of Saud, and perpetuates it to this day
in other words, as Americans, challenge the political elite by insisting that they change the policy, by, for example, making US complicity in the Saudi state a presidential campaign issue
somehow, I'm not optimistic that it's going to happen

introspection is needed, but so is action and saying enough is enough.
53 of the suicide bombers so far were saudi and you never heard a peep about it from the white house or any of our elected officials.

exactly, but it is not a Republican thing, it is a bipartisan thing, and it is false to suggest otherwise

I like pie!
That chart certainly makes a point and I'm glad to see it. There was a story in the LA Times a few weeks ago saying this but the graphic is perfect. Maybe the bushies can understand pictures better.
Italy?!?!?!?! Shocked me too! Italy. Who knew?
Thanks Hubris! Thanks too for all your posts from yKos. Great job!
