I teach at an upscale suburban HS in Central Texas that is maybe 65% anglo, 15% black, 15% Hispanic and 5% Asian. I was somewhat surprised when McCain won the student body mock election on election day and to see a lot of white kids cheering when the results were announced. It was sweet to see real pride in the black and Hispanic kids the next day when Obama had won. You could really sense that something had shifted in the world.
But what amazed me the most was hearing some of the bile spouted by white kids in my classes the day after the election. Real nastiness that they clearly pick up at home from their parents and churches. Cute little blonde cheerleader types in my face about how Obama is going to take my guns away and griping about how the "baby killing" is now going to start. I was frankly astonished. I teach Chemistry so not a lot of political discussion happens in class. But I really didn't expect so many students to be nothing more than conduits for the bile they hear at home.
But one can take heart by all of this because I believe it really signals a massive shift in this country. For the first time in a century, the South (or at least the old white South) has lost all its political influence. For the first time in several lifetimes, the racist Evangelical wing of the Republican party has no real leverage anywhere in any branch of government. There are no swing vote Southern Democratic Senators. With the bluing of the west and mid-Atlantic (Virginia, North Carolina), the deep South no longer matters on the electoral map.
What this means is that the Republican party is faced with a stark choice. They can continue to stir up their white southern base with the politics of resentment and consign themselves to political oblivion on the national stage. Or they can set about the long hard task of reforming the party for a return to the national stage. How Republicans respond over the next couple years to both Obama and the hatred in their base is going to tell us a lot about the future of their party.
Demographics is destiny. And the country isn't growing any whiter.

i've belonged to the splc for years now. they send out very informative and chilling literature. they also do wonderful work in schools teaching tolerence and respect.

The SPLC learned early on that the only way to cripple these hate groups is to go for their wallets. Deny them the property on which to set up their little camps, take away the money their deluded members fork over, and the organizations eventually sags and breaks under the strain.
I say use all the anti-terrorist laws against the racist fucknozzles. If they can pry apart the life of a Muslim shopkeeper for having a donation can out for a charity that (unknown to him) funnels money back to extremists (this has happened more than once in Brooklyn and Queens) then why is the Gubmint NOT tearing apart the books of the Klan/Aryan Nation/Palin's husband's secessionist group? All of THEIR asses should be in Guantanamo getting "special treatment" way, way way before they should be harassing the guy who sells me my cumin seeds, za'atar, and harissa paste.

hip hip hooray and stuff. i've been a huge fan of him and his work. he trolls the law schools for the best and brightest, you know, guys who used to be tabbed for the justice department before it became a place for pat robertson's legal eagles. dees promises them long hours and low pay doing work that makes a difference. they do.
they went after tom metzger for inciting skinheads in oregon and they broke his ass in poway california.
hit them in their wallets. hard. over and over. watching the looks on their faces as they realize that their "aryan compound" in idaho is going to be seized and shuttered is priceless. it's better than watching their faces contort under torture.

They found out they could just come running to Uncle Sugar instead of addressing their deep structural problems when they got themselves into trouble. If we bail them out again, they're just going to be looking at three jumbo-sized British Leylands.
For the record, I also think the Wall Street bailout is a stinker, and have been saying so in multiple fora since it first came up.

As long-time (though minor) contributors, Mrs. Fate and I are unreasonably proud of the SPLC's work. Anything that demoralizes these White Supremacist goobers has always been OK in our book.
And satisying as it might be to do a reverse-Greensboro on the KKK and its affiliates, I have to admit that -- when wielded by the likes of Dees and company -- the legal fileting-knife approach has much to recommend it.
Yeah, I really LIKE lawyers and legal systems, since they're far preferable to all-out civil war.
The way one shuts down racists and racist organizations is to go after their wallets. It's also non-violent, although breath-takingly disruptive.

Love me some SPLC. And: sick with this. I mean, this verdict is important and so good. What happened to this beautiful boy breaks my heart, enrages me, and I wish him every support in (what's going to be lifelong) recovery. And at the same time, this happens to non-citizens and they have no recourse, no press. I read The KKK tried to kick Jordan Gruver to death. By mistake. They thought he was an illegal immigrant, just another Hispanic. Actually Jordan is an American citizen. His parents were Native-American and Panamanian. Just a case of mistaken identity. and where my rage also goes is: ICE and the anti-immigrant groups need to be on the sue-the-fuckers-and-bleed-off-all-their-money list. Quick.
This makes me sad. On the other hand Barack Obama won in a huge landslide. I believe that because you know damn well that McCain still had stolen votes, even with people paying attention to the voter disinfranchisement, and the goofy voting machines.
