I may not even watch the SB this year. I'm from NJ originally, so I'm supposed (by family tradition) to have a warm spot for the Giants, and I fucking despise the godsdamned Patriots. But the line out of Vegas is already Pats +14.

>That win set things up in town emotionally, giving these Giants fans a bit more confidence than we should have had, what with our general feelings about the team and the QB Eli Manning. <
Um, WHAT win? You mean the fact that they were able to step up and compete? This RABID Pats fan seems to remember them being on the win column that day...
S'ok, Wanderer. I'll be watching twice as hard anyway, so you don't have to. Though it looks like I am going to have to scrupulously avoid pre-game because Fox is gonna turn it into "politics and football" though I am sure it will be "fair and balanced" like all of their political discourse is.

Well, I cracked my lovely cobalt blue bottle of lucky Skye for the game, then capped it back and stashed the rest in the freezer, where it will mellow for the next two weeks until needed again. Lucky vodka? Yes, won from some silly nay-sayer at the end of the regular season. There's plenty for the Super Bowl...

I'm not a football fan, but HDTV makes you watch anything...and this game made me understand why people watch football. It was great fun to watch -- but not as much fun as reading this blog entry. Nice work, LM.

I was pissed that they fucked around and let it go into overtime - switched over to watch Venus struggle against a young Polish qualifier then saw that the Giants had gotten the ball back ("Favre must have thrown another interception!") and switched back in time to see the set up for Tynes' field goal attempt - "He's gonna make this one...he'd better". Whoopee!!! One more big time sports extravaganza for the folks before we're stuck watching the Knucks and the stRangers 'til baseball season starts. Golf (TIGER!!!!!) and March Madness awaits...
I've still got the Pat's by 12 in the Stupor Bowl - sorry sports fans.

Some Observations:
That interception was classic Brett Favre, record-holder for most interceptions ever thrown in the NFL. At least Packers fans can finally have the discussion they need to have about finally asking him to retire.
Burress beat Harris all game long. The Giants had so many opportunities to put that game away a lot earlier but missed some passes and some field goals.
If Vegas is really +14 then put money on the Giants. If people think the Pats are going to really smack down a team that they played a mere 3 games ago then good for them. But the Giants right now aren't the same wild-eyed gangly team that got dismantled by the Vikings 41-17. They can hang in there against the Pats, especially since the Pats postseason victories haven't exactly been electric.

Congratulations to the Giants for their big win. We here in Titletown are wondering just why our team can't seem to play in cold weather anymore.
But we are comforted in the knowledge that this team was not supposed to get as far as it did, but did anyway. It's a relatively inexperienced team and yet, went to the playoffs.
Next year should be interesting. Now we have to endure the unending news reports on local television concerning Favre's future. As it is, every time he farts we get a news story. At the end of the season, every sportscast has at least one story about whether he will return.
Let the speculating begin...

I'm no sort of football fan, and everything I could tell you about the game could fit on a postcard with room to spare. However, I'm sure a lot of people in the white working-class neighborhood in which I live and work are all "WTF!" because even I couldn't miss how psyched everybody was about the Pack having a shot at the superbowl. Not this year, I guess.

The Giants improbably managed to beat the Buccaneers
Improbable my ass. Gruden's been riding on the dregs of Tony Dungy's 2002 team for way too fucking long. Then he got rid of Joey Galloway, Cadillac Williams took the season ending hit to his knee in game 4 and then we lost Earnest Graham; Garcia got hurt and when he was able to play healthy near the end of the season Gruden wouldn't play him; the defense is getting long in the tooth and the coach's free agent selections aren't worth a fuck.
And yet they're gonna keep that grandstanding bastard.
I still root for the Iggles (you can take the boy outta Philly but you can't take the Philly outta the boy), so you know that the Giants ain't my favorite people, but I have to give them their props. They played a hell of a game against Green Bay.
And now, I'm going to sit here and watch the Orlando Magic implode.
Woe is me.

(we are stuck with teh other one. its tellign that our qb's ook a lot better in the 2 min drill, or when the head sets die out.)

Props due the Giants for standing up in a vicious game environment.
The Packers were so hot last week, dispatching Seattle, it was a bit of a shock to see them so listless.
But they couldn't move the ball, they couldn't stop the Giants in a meaningful way, and the weather kept the big plays out of the equation.
The Giants deserved it. But now I don't know who I'm betting against in the Super Bowl: The nasty ol' Pats, or the Giants that kicked our Pack out of the game.

“Improbable my ass.”
Trust me...with Eli Manning taking the ball in the pocket, any big win is kind of improbable—and I say this as a Giants fan. Loyalty doesn't blind me to his deficiencies.
It's just surprising to see him overcoming them in the playoff crunch. And I'm not alone in my surprise—believe that.

I saw that game at home. The Bucs sucked hard-Garcia looked stiff, he had no time to throw, receivers dropped balls and the ground game was fucking non-existent. Meanwhile Monte Kiffin's Cover Two was getting picked apart by the Giants.
I didn't even bother to watch the second half-I took a nap KNOWING the Bucs were done.

Rooting against teams from large markets is one factor in my perverse sports fandom hierarchy. Rooting against white hopes is another.
The media moguls won with the Giants' advance from the NY mega-market, but they lost Bret Favre. Two weeks of drooling over golden boy Tom Brady will be insufferable enough.
(Favre and Brady seem to be OK guys. It’s not about them. It’s about the white hope phenomenon that attaches to them.)

Deacon G garcia is old and done, you are correct wit hthat...had the bucs been in any other division they miss the playoffs by a mile...regardless, the old eli, the one we all know and love from last year or even the begining of thsi year finds a way to lose that game...taht is the amazing part, we are talking about eli fucking manning here, he is rex grossmen east. he is a slighty less mobile version of tony romo. in any big game where ou absolutly need a pass you can count on him to throw an interception.
the guy, through thsi entire year would stare down his reciver big time...as in he left the pocket staring at the guy he was going to throw to, and never looked away. WTF happened? how the hell did he wake up while im still stuck with grossmen??? they where the same damm guy, who made the light turn on for eli?

With two weeks to prepare, the superior team always figures out how to beat the inferior team, and more often than not, actually pulls it off. This Patriot team, especially. But, hey, I'm hoping for an exciting last game of the season.

I'm with Moonglum. How did we get stuck with Rex Grossman going backwards in what should have been his breakout season, and what happened to Eli Manning? Did he finally pay attention to the playbook?
Tampa Bay was the worst team in the playoffs in either conference. They should have finished 5-11 so that smug asshole Gruden would finally get fired.
Green Bay forgot the first rule of boxing: Box a fighter, fight a boxer. They fought the boxer (Seattle) but forgot to box the fighter (Giants).
